Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

I was concerned about that too but it hasn't been a problem. I use 5 minute oats and do bring the water to a boil and the pan remains non stick. At home I regularly use it for the oatmeal and fried eggs and with just a shot of cooking spray or some oil the eggs flip nicely without using a...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

Good find. I'm no longer looking for them, but if I do see one for a good price I'd grab it. If I'm solo I'd probably take my small one, it's barely 6 inches across the bottom. It's the perfect size for oatmeal and is big enough to make a grilled cheese or for heating up other sandwiches. It is...

Pelican seeks protection under Canadian bankruptcy law as it restructures

I'd like to see a photo of your Pelican if you have one Glenn.

What did Calvin Rutstrum say about the 18 ft Grumman canoe?

I paddle big boats, 18 and 20 feet, and I think Rutstrum is right when comparing boats of similar materials and weight. When you throw light weight compost boats into the mix I don't think it holds true. I have found that my 17' 40lb boat takes less energy than either of my approximately 90lb...

    easy to cook dinner options

Fresh cabbage does hold up well. My wife makes good noodles and cabbage that we eat with smoked kielbossi, but that's not quick and easy. But it is easy to steam or sauté or add to a taco or even ramen soup. A quick easy meal that we usually plan for our first night out is ramen soup and hot...

    First paddle of 2025

This is my first paddle of the spring from yesterday. I did get out once in January but I’m not counting that. My lake mostly thawed out on Tuesday but I didn’t get inspired to get out until I read Jim Dodds post above. If I had one of my W/C boats out I would have been on the water already.

    Throwback Thursday Photos

This one is from almost 25 years ago. With an odd number of trippers my wife took the solo boat.

    Favorite camp games?

My wife and I amused ourselves one afternoon by seeing who could find stones that made the most realistic looking teeth. I lost.

    Trade Wars to Affect Tripping?

I'm surprised more of the Canadian You Tube trippers don't make a trip to the Everglades. It would be more interesting than the hot tent videos they make in the winter to me. Don't underestimate the wildness of the Everglades. Between the mosquitoes, no-see-ums, racoons, lack of fresh water...

Recreational Barrel Works 2-Part Canoe Pack

I like the idea of splitting your gear in two packs. Not only for adjusting trim, but I'd rather lift two thirty pound packs out of the boat then one 60 lb one. It's also good to be able to lift one pack at a time when getting them on your back, but it doesn't look like this system will allow that.

PortagePal to carry paddles and fishing rods

I'm not a gadget person and I don't hand carry much, if anything if I can help it. I wouldn't have a need for it, but can see where others might.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

Thanks for the info. I guess you can expect high water at that time, but that probably minimizes the chance of running into ice in the big pools. I'd like to get back up there when I can spend more time.

How much safety is too much safety?

This isn't in a canoe but it's certainly a possible scenario. I went fishing with some coworkers who were alcoholics and it wasn't pretty. It was an overnight trip, where we slept on the boat miles from shore. We got a lot of fish, but I would never do it again.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

Yeah, that's probably true. Do you have an idea when the river typically is navigable in the spring? How about the Raquette river, anybody?

How much safety is too much safety?

I sometimes take a Mossberg pump shot gun that has the safety on the top of the grip in easy reach with your thumb. I used to keep a round in the chamber until I noticed that the safety would turn from safe to fire on its own. I realized that when I hand carried the gun the safety came in...

    The Oldest Inuit Footage Ever

I met two traditional boat builders at the show. One was from South East Ak. He had two scale model canoes on his table. One was finished and the other was not. He told to me that the unfinished one had not yet been steamed and bent into shape. He explained the process, saying it was the same as...

How much safety is too much safety?

I've never brought a helmet or used floatation on a WW trip, but I see that you tubers wear them for bigger rapids. I guess you can hit your head anywhere. Our best effort for safety is good decision making, but accidents do happen.

    Moose — Stories, Photos, Videos

I think I’ve posted this photo before, but I think it fits this topic. I don’t know the moose’s story, but this is my story. When I first got to Ak I took this photo of a moose in my backyard. When I went to take it I had no idea he was in a state of arousal. That was a surprise, and I’ve...
