    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

Thanks Glenn. I too have problems with mice at home. I had one give birth inside of a Duluth pack. I found it while unpacking three days after a trip, so I'm not sure if the mouse was a local or a stow away from the bush. Probably local. When I said I couldn't have done the trip without the...

Thanks for asking Mem. Surprisingly I've had so many PMs from people claiming it was theirs that I don't know who to send it to, and nice try Glenn, but I would have seen your name in the trail register.;) I think I'm just gonna burn it.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

I've always used an airtight roll top to store my food and stashed it on the ground away from camp and never had a problem with that. I did use a bear canister in Denali Park back in 84', it was small and heavy. I hope they've gotten better since then. BTW, I got a great night's sleep that...

I just watched few minutes of a Matt Post video. My guess is that he considers himself more of a videographer than a canoeist. It's OK to switch sides, but what I saw was a guy who put very little thought into his paddling. Even his posture in the boat didn't look like that of a paddler to me...

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

That's something I'll have to look into. In the mean time I think stashing the food far enough away from camp so the resident mice can't find it should work. As far as getting a good night sleep goes, you still need to worry about them chewing through your other packs, or even your sleeping bag...

    Small Leather Pouches

They look nice and will be practical for organizing small items, and they're a lot more classy then Crown Royal bags.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

I figured you probably did this one, in a w/c canoe I bet. I was glad I didn't take a w/c boat on this trip. I would be OK with it with another person along. With one person on each side of the boat they can lift a lot of weight up while sliding it up and over the dam. Most the dams seemed to...

Oopsie moments, or at least almost "oopsie"?

That's a pretty steep drop, especially with a loaded boat. It's a good thing you had the floatation and had your stuff tied in. It looks like it worked in that situation.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

I did a spur of the moment trip to the Oswegatchie recently and it was a great time. I planned to spend three nights up there poking around above High Falls. Things didn't go as planned. The last cell phone call I made to my wife was dropped, the last thing I heard her say was "text me...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Sounds good to me. The worst that can happen is we'll be two good bad examples.;) Mid week is better for me, what works for you? It will have to be this week or next as I'm leaving town until about Thanksgiving.

What I've noticed is that you can spot a newbie easier on the portage trail than on the water. At any rate, you can tell who didn't read a book or get any training.

    Oswegatchie intel

I was there ten days ago and it was at a good level. Definitely not too high and not too low either. There was plenty of water, even in the few shallow spots. The river is mostly deep pools and the shallow spots are short, so even if you had to drag a little I think it would still be doable. I...

Ever have a downriver wind push you up river?

Getting pushed upstream by an upstream wind is pretty easy to visualize. The OP in this thread was pushed upstream by a downstream wind. Much more mysterious.

Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

Yes, it's all about carving a turn. I'd been leaning my boat for years, mostly to get closer to the gunnel and the water for ease of paddling. I didn't make a conscious effort to carve. Carving is what I added, in addition I added leaning into the turn, regardless of what side I'm paddling on...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I'm about an hour and a half from Matamoris, where I 84 crosses the river and would be willing to meet for a day trip sometime, or even an overnighter. Not because I have much to teach you, but more to practice together. I've never even seen anyone use a pole in real life so I think it would be fun.

Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

I guess I should have mentioned that I'm not talking about wind with significant waves. If there are waves, keeping them out of your boat would be the priority. I'm also not talking about high winds either, just normal wind or even a breeze. It can be coming from any direction too, even in a...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I've been using my 20' White and my 17' Bell Seliga this year. They are both good, the 20 footer tracks better and the Seliga is more maneuverable, as expected. I took the Seliga on the Oswegatchie and the pole was a big help in getting over the beaver dams. Other than that I was mostly paddling...

Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

Do you lean into the wind, away from it or try to keep your boat flat side to side?
