The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

I see I've asked a question with vocabulary that's vague in loaded ways. "Whitewater capable" might mean downriver trips with a couple Class II rapids, or might mean playboating, or pushing the envelope in Class IV water. For me personally, what gumpus described matches the conditions I tend...

    'new' Bell Morningstar

Helpful tip, thanks kona! Especially in reference to another Bell royalex, which I assume has the same style/shape of gunnels.

Oh also, I heard back from someone at Millbrook, presumably Kaz tho they didn't say, that the molds for the Souhegan and Coho went to Hayden's daughter after he passed. So presumably those boats are truly no longer being made, unless someone has new molds made off existing boats. I wonder how...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

I thought of you, Steve, and our conversations on boat specs and poling. Wide enough to pole? 😁

Wellllll......I have to eat some crow now, and thank the heavens for a supportive wife who has not made me start sleeping in the boat stable - er garage - yet. Yesterday I brought home a Royalex Morningstar that popped up locally at a very good price. It has noticeably blunter stems than the...

    How’s this for single blading...

When I got the dog and my kayak was no longer an option, a couple folks recommended an SUP instead of a canoe. Others have since recommended an SUP when they see me standing up in my canoe. I chose a canoe because I felt like it's more versatile - paddle comfortably in a wider temp range and...

Are none of Swift's layers considered whitewater capable?

Canoeist paddling 6,000-mile Great Loop out of gratitude for life

Ppine, I agree on the one hand, but then again I try to trip in wilderness-esque places in part because I want to be off grid. Generally I agree most of us could use less screentime. Traversing the east coast, Intracoastal Waterway, Mississippi etc seem a very different kind of trip, and one...

Reminder re November 2026 Fund Drive

Kudos to the folks rewilding their yards! Ecologist Doug Tallamy had an impressive statistic, which I'll attempt to paraphrase with moderate accuracy - the acreage of lawn in the US exceeds the acreage of just about all the national parks put together. And kudos to Glenn for keeping the lights...

Thanks! I actually emailed him last night. The Coho doesn't sound too much bigger than the Souhegan. I imagine rocker and sharpness of the stem are among the key differences.

Two nights in the rainy, cold St. Regis Canoe Area, ADKs

Great pics! I was up in the Hoel/Slang stretch in September, and made use of campsite recommendations from @Patrick Corry on another CT thread (thanks!). A memorable type 2 fun trip in Sept 2019 was likewise to St Regis Pond. We had 2 nights and 3 days. Day 2 we were windbound on St Regis...

Helicopter Rescue of BWCA Canoeists Who Got Swept Over Waterfall

"According to Rick Slatten, captain of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad who responded to the incident, of the over 500 water fatalities in the squad’s history, less than three percent were wearing life jackets." The article linked to had more details from the victims - one of them knew the...

Great break down, thanks Steve! The Souhegan does sound like your NC - lots of rocker and very blunt in the stems. My suspicion is that the Heron (an oil-canning, slow-paddling boat) actually helps climb a straight chute because the ends are pointier and there's less rocker than the Souhegan...

Very interesting. I think I don't have enough time in boat to notice the differences to such a degree yet. I certainly do notice differences. I think there's a bit of a feedback loop where more experience makes the differences more noticeable, and but a more experienced poler (or paddled)...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Alas, I work M-F by and large. And further alas, turns out I'm unavailable this weekend. Perhaps Sat, Nov 2 if the weather holds? Or are you already gone by then?

I'm not sure the Phoenix would ever be a good boat for poling rocky moving water....and not sure I aim to find out unless I can borrow someone else's IXP haha. But, maybe if I get more poling time in it.... The Souhegan and Morningstar were both attempts to find the lightest possible boat to...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I'd certainly be interested! A Maine guide in a poling clinic said one of the best ways to learn is watching a good poler. I certainly can't claim that mantle, but I bet watching someone else pole would help as you suggested. I'm also about an hour and a half from there and would be glad to...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Nice, I've done a couple day outings on the upper Delaware around Callicoon. It's a very long day of driving for me including shuttles....maybe poling up and floating down would make it more palatable, but I can't remember how suitable it really is for poling up there (and of course it's...

I thought it was fine, but then again I have years of paddling tandems backwards solo with less than ideal trim. It's never great in wind and it never tracks that well, which is why i finally broke down and got a real solo, a NS Phoenix, a couple years back. (Recently I've done a little...
