A bunch of you are keeping a secret.

Grandma Gatewood was a well-known multi-time thru-hiker and advocate of the AT. I read a book about her recently, and she had a terribly abusive husband. Woods are good for healing the soul. Modern medicine sure helps with cancer though. F cancer indeed! Best wishes for those grappling...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I got a Northstar in Nov of 2022, my first boat with wood gunnels. One thing I will say, @ABT is treat them with something before use. I was so excited to start using my boat; the gunnels arrived with some coats of oil, but not enough, and they immediately picked up dirt smudges when sliding...

    La Voga Veneta

Another article on yuloh (ro in Japanese) which has suggested ratios for length on either side of the fulcrum point, for those contemplating adding one to their canoe rig. It also introduces the idea of a longitudinal offset to account for mounting the oar closer to one gunnel instead of...

Does anyone have a canoe set up with a rowing rig ?

I too am interested in rowing but don't care much for going backwards. This is what intrigues me about Venetian-style rowing. I think standing up makes the biomechanical advantages similar to traditional rowing, with power emanating from the legs and core. I'm still pondering whether a...

How to Get Heavy Ice Out of a Canoe

As for salt and plowing, here in southern NYS they also salt and plow til the pavement is bare and well pot-holed. Seems like a good way to require more road repair and turn our wells salty at the same time. But it's more convenient than chains, so we keep doing it...

How to Get Heavy Ice Out of a Canoe

I didn't know a Killick hitch either - it came up when I did an image search for timberhitch. I grabbed that picture as it was watermarked so the source was credited easily within the pic. I suppose now I should look it up and see the difference.

How to Get Heavy Ice Out of a Canoe

I imagine salt might not be great for seat bolts though, or maybe woodwork. Not a big deal if rinsed off promptly, but sounds like prompt outdoor rinses in AK in winter are hard (as in, frozen solid). If the ice had laminated itself to the hull interior, hot water might have released it into a...

Fantastic trip report, thanks for sharing!

Sharing your location dot with spouse

Yes, hanging on to my 2012 is seeming more and more attractive the more I hear about new cars - I don't believe it has any capacity to connect to the internet, though I could be wrong. All the intimate details of my life are still being usurped by my pocket computer ("smart phone"), but I keep...

    Lining Harness?

Armchair novice chiming in here - I have no real lining experience of my own but have been reading up in the hopes of using the skills on a future trip. Garrett Conover's 'Beyond the Paddle' has an extensive chapter about lining. His harness placement approach seems to pretty much mimic Mason...

    RockSTAR or SRT?

Should I be the enabler that says 'grab it!' ? 😈 Seems like it should retain resale value if you change your mind, if you're getting it at a reasonable price now? I picked up an Rx Morningstar to compare with my White Gold Morningstar just as things were freezing up this winter - I look...

Sharing your location dot with spouse

I got a Garmin InReach for backcountry travel after a very bad incident with a friend out of cell service a couple years back. I decided that it was irresponsible for, with my loved ones and SAR teams in mind, to not have one. But I only activate it for backcountry trips. I keep my phone's...

    Kenco Outfitters

I should add they don't always have all the canoe parts on display. The other day they only had the yokes and seats out, but when I asked, they had a slew of thwarts of different sizes/thicknesses in the stockroom.

    Canoe in the forest

Fascinating article, thanks for sharing. I picked up this book at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria last summer. It has lots of detail on history and construction as well as pictures. Would recommend.

    Kenco Outfitters

Not many outfitters around me are well stocked on canoe parts, but Kenco Outfitters in Kingston NY routinely comes through for thwarts, yokes, seats, and seat bolts. I just got a replacement thwart from them the other day. They currently stock Nova Craft, Slipstream, and Adirondack Canoe Co...

Jim Henry is back and just designed a canoe for Adirondack Canoe Co.

Exciting. I've never paddled or poled an Explorer but they seem to have a real cult following. Weight is a deterrent to me on the Rx Explorers but maybe there will be something similar in the ACC line up soon.

    Tarp pole modification

Very clever! I've started using forked sticks or my double-blade when I have it, to assist with bear/varmint hangs. This takes it to the next level and isn't predicated on finding a good stick.

Winter paddle and poling through ice

Thanks for the ice outing report, Al - very cool. Glad you could recover that shoe. Great discussion here. Mostly happy to read and learn. I've gotten bronze and steel shoes and aluminum poles in the last year, graduating up from carved spruce out of the woods. I do feel like using both...

    Canoe seats

@stripperguy how are the blocks that the seat bolts to secured to the hull? Seems like a good set-up for a break-away seat in case of entrapment in whitewater.
