    Allagash Forestry Trip

I know how it is. Been there and done that. One of the things about the regulations that ended the log drives is that the landowners brought in roads galore to truck the logs to market. For paddlers that might seem to be a good thing at first but in reality the impact was quite destructive...

    Photo of the day

No Title Miles from nowhere. NWT. "So, what's the plan?" This was looking like a three day portage up to the rim of the canyon and down river for who knows how far. Ugh. Bunch of suburban "kids" maybe in over their heads?

    Allagash Forestry Trip

Nice trip. Great time of year. I've never put an Allagash trip together quite like that. Is there a reason not to put in at Chamberlain Bridge?

    Lake Trout fishing?

Togue = Lake Trout - so they taste like Lake Trout. If you have never had lake trout it is a good eating fairly light fish. I believe it is a char but not 100% sure of that. Arctic Char is a different creature. Here is the wikipedia piece on lake trout or togue...

    Cowboy Coffee thoughts

Slightly off topic - for those of you who enjoy a bit of creamer - I have noticed that half and half in a small container will last a good long time even if not refrigerated in the cool/cold shoulder seasons. Lately I've gone to carrying two small plastic one serving containers of half and half...

Need advice to repair cracked inwale

Do you know how the damage occurred? I had a very similar looking break once and this is how it happened. It was a freakish accident and a lesson learned. My son borrowed my canoe. When he was loading up to head home he had the canoe tied down on the rack except he forgot to tie off the bow line...

Planning a multi day canoe trip this coming spring, need input

I think April is awful early for a trip with novice trippers in Maine. Ice is not out on many lakes. Rivers are running high and very cold. Weather can be an issue also.

A weekend on Cobscook Bay Maine

I spent a long weekend at Cobscook Bay State Park some years ago and I will never forget it. Lovely place. I could sit in a campsite under a tarp and watch the tides come in and out drinking amber fluid and smoking cigars for a good long while and never get bored. Nice pictures.

    Lake Trout fishing?

Many rivers in the Canadian Arctic (Thelon for example) hold large populations of togue. I will never forget one day on a small tributary we were paddling up stream exploring a bit and we stopped to do some fishing from shore. There was a flow of crystal clear water, about one foot deep...

    Lake Trout fishing?

Right after ice out on the big lakes in Maine, Togue can be taken by trolling a big streamer just under the surface. Landlocked Salmon are taken in the same fashion at that time.

Lobster Lake to Allagash Gateway Campground Questions

Don't underestimate the potential for trouble on Chesuncook. Don't do a crossing if its bad. If you have a south wind it usually means bad weather and often it will blow all night. If you have a north wind it often dies at night and you can paddle at night or very early am and get the heck...

Please help me make my first canoe decision!!!

Nice canoe! I have two and I love them. You will get better at car topping. The sea foam interior is classic. Got to love it. Your boat looks to be in remarkable condition. Probably would have sold for around $600 up this way.

Please help me make my first canoe decision!!!

I vote for the tripper as well. I own two. They are very rugged and need little or no care or maintenance. A 17 foot canoe is a great compromise. The tripper is very stable and has lots of room. Some call it the pick up truck of the north.

    Stakes

I carry different stakes for tarp and tent depending on the trip. But for most trips I carry a good supply of short 9 inch (for tent) and long 12 inch (for tarp) easton aluminium stakes made from tubular aluminium - similar to the material used for arrows. The 8 inch are nice and easy to find...

    Finding a bear

No Title Trust me Dave04 - we have many bears in Vermont/New Hampshire. You don't see them much when you are out and about. But we see them in our yards quite a bit. They love black oil sunflower seed. Here is a shot of a cute little guy in my back yard awhile ago.
