    Wenonah Solitude repair and renovation

It looks like it will be very nice when you are done. I would not sand anything other than the repairs and resin you apply to fair them. Kevlar gets fuzzy when sanded. I personally would only make localized repairs with fiberglass cloth and epoxy. I am sure more experienced folks will...

    New project... 17.5' Atkinson Traveler

Bummer. How green was the ash? Kiln dried? There is a such thing as over steaming, but what you did looks about right for that thickness. Does that piece have a lot of grain runout where it split? I try and steam the piece next to where I bend it, but it didn’t seem like an excessive long time...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

I know he’s won several national whitewater championships in the 70’s and 80’s. Even done in a strip canoe… hard to imagine. Probably just his paddling style, although that paddle does look odd in that canoe! Bob

Fibbing To Your Spouse About Canoe Stuff

Canoe related in my paddling world- I bought two fly rods the week before I got married… I just didn’t want to have that conversation. Thankfully my wife has been supportive of my hobbies, but I don’t drop real big big bucks on gear. Bob

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

That’s some fine looking material you got there! I have had good luck glueing knots for what it’s worth. I am looking forward to following along. Bob

    Animal Behavior

I witnessed a chipmunk stalk, dispatch, and eat a large frog…. Didn’t expect that. I found a dead but seemingly unharmed fish (crappie) in my front yard. I’m guessing an eagle dropped it.

    Snow? — Where You Are

This old relic was used 75 years ago to plow sidewalks at Dartmouth in NH. A bit overkill these days I imagine. I just use it to relocate my wood shop when the mood strikes…

    Snow? — Where You Are

Ice melted on the lake near me last night. Guys were out ice fishing last weekend. Usually ice out is late March. Odd year for sure.

A Stripper and a Composite Copy

You got your hands on some beautiful stock. Really clever saw set up. That would have never occurred to me. Is that your idea or common in the stripper world? Bob

    Best "tea bag" coffee?

I am down right snobby about coffee at home. Conical burr grinder and other fancy apparatus. I also drink it black. I find the bags with newly ground beans highly acceptable with little clean up. I enjoy cowboy, press, pour over, percolator, etc. if done well, but rarely want to clean it up in...

When is a Canoe Not a Canoe?

I build a fair amount of furniture and the “shop skills” acquired from building and repairing wood canoes with hand tools have only helped. I find myself using power tools less and less and my joinery is better for it. My mistakes happen slower too. Bob
