    Recreational Barrel Works

I took a trip this past weekend and was able to test this gear out. I hear you on the open top organizers. They were out of the zipped organizers when I purchased, so I bought 2 of the coolers and one of the open organizers. They worked out pretty good. I had cold stuff in one cooler and...

    Recreational Barrel Works

I just received a expedition pack and liner, 30 L barrel, and miscellaneous barrel organizers (including a cooler). I'm psyched to try everything out on a trip this weekend. The expedition pack is enormous. Coming from lightweight backpacking, this is the biggest pack that I own by far. It...

    Lake George NY Islands

Great trip report. I would like to paddle that area of Lake George. I have hiked the Tongue range a number of times. It's a beautiful spot.

    Guitars and other musical instruments

Depends on the brand and model, but generally on the expensive side new. They can be found much cheaper used. I bought my Rainsong used for over 50% off the retail price.

    Guitars and other musical instruments

Yes, carbon fiber body and neck. There are a number of manufacturers making carbon fiber guitars, but Rainsong is the most well known. As Cheeseandbeans said, with it being carbon fiber you don’t have to worry about temperature or humidity changes. And the carbon fiber guitars sound good. My...

    Guitars and other musical instruments

Who else brings a guitar or other musical instrument on your canoe trips? I have a Rainsong carbon fiber parlor guitar that I will bring on occasion, depending on the nature of the trip. Most of my trips are 1-2 nights, without any portages, so adding a small guitar isn't a major burden. I...

    Shelta Hats

Shelta Hats are awesome! I have used a Seahawk since getting into canoeing a few years ago. I tried the Condor model too, and returned it. It was just too wide of a brim. The Seahawk is a great size. I wear the Seahawk while on the water, and I bring a baseball cap for around camp. I have...

    I'm throwing in the towel

I use a shamwow style towel. It works great for getting water out of the boat, but I have also used one for things like drying off after a swim, drying off my tarp after a night of rain, and to help dry out wet clothing and boots. Great multi-use item.

    Gear storage and trip packing

For storing at home, any gear that can fit in a plastic tote will go in one. Most of the totes are stacked in the basement, but a few are in the garage. Larger items are hung in the basement or stored in the garage. I like the metal racks in the video above. That's something I want to get...

Who sleeps on the the newer light cots?

I have been a hammock camper for years, but this year I switched to a cot. I use this one. I picked it because of the width. I am not a big guy, but in looking online I found a lot of the lightweight cots to be pretty narrow in comparison to this one, and I wanted the extra room. No...

    Rigging Tarps

Fantastic thread! I enjoyed reading through all of the informative posts. I use paracord for my ridgeline, but I use shock cord (bungee) for my tieouts. I cut the shock cord into ~20 ft lengths, and then fold it in half and tie the ends together. From there I then tie knots in the doubled...

    CCS tarp :)

Happy CCS tundra tarp owner here. I have a 12 x 12.5 in yellow. I went with yellow after hanging out under my buddy's yellow 10 x 10 on a trip. Great tarps. I also have one of their tarp poles, and it is high quality. They are made by Easton and are very solid. I bought the longer one, and...

    Hello from Upstate NY

I can see the Wolfman Jack connection - I get that all the time - but no, not related that I know of. :) WB is my homage to a little band from Vermont that I like. They wrote a song called Wolfman's Brother, and they have a few other cool songs too.

    Swift Cruisers Anyone

I will keep an eye out for that type of behavior with the PB canoes. Did you replace your Spitfire 13 and Rapidfire with something else? If so, which canoe(s)?

    Hello from Upstate NY

I know Schenectady. I haven't been there in a while, but I get down there now and then to play disc golf in Central Park. It's a nice disc golf course. Mr. Hotaling, my high school photography teacher, would be flattered - those are handheld shots with phone cameras. The first two are with a...

    Swift Cruisers Anyone

I test paddled the Swift Cruiser 14.8 and 15.8 recently. I'm 5'9" and around 175 lbs, and the 14.8 fit me very well. The 15.8 fit too, but I felt the wind pushing me around in the 15.8, and I was more one with the boat in the 14.8. Both canoes were nice, and paddled well, but I wasn't wowed...

    Hello from Upstate NY

Hey, I grew up near #10 on that list! You got it! Great site. We were there in late October, so weren't able to take advantage of the cliff and swimming area. I would go back. It would be a fun site in the middle of the summer. Thank you! Will see you around.

    Hello from Upstate NY

Hi. Great community here. I have been using a Hornbeck New Tricks 13 and New Tricks 14 over the last few years as my introduction to canoe tripping. I recently switched to a Placid Boatworks Spitfire 13. I haven't had the Spitfire 13 out on any overnights yet, but I have been enjoying it on...
