    Litter, garbage and trash

So if you took the old tires with you the handling fee wouldn't apply? I still say that the program isn't viable if dealers are needing to charge an additional amount for handling.

    Litter, garbage and trash

Sounds like it's not a viable program. The "tire handling fee" should be included as part of the initial disposal/recycling tax on the tire. People should be able to leave the tires with the dealer and the dealer would already have been reimbursed for disposal costs.

    Litter, garbage and trash

That's what my suggestion to include the cost of disposal for everything is addressing. It's a form of taxation to generate money to build and maintain disposal and recycling infrastructure so that everything can be disposed of with no after-sale cost. For example, those tires could be picked up...

    Litter, garbage and trash

I believe the USA should enact a requirement for manufacturers/distributors to include the cost of disposal for EVERYTHING we buy. Something similar to what is done in Germany. More expensive? You bet, initially, but it would better reflect the true cost of goods and materials. As it is, we're...

    Some Freestyle Cruising in Hungary

That's what the FUNctional Freestyle Workshop is about: Freestyle maneuvers with less flair. Messing around on small streams or in a swamp or marsh with a sport canoe can be a lot of fun and is typically easily accessible on short notice. It's not canoe tripping but can be quite satisfying.

The History of the Curtis Dragonfly and Shouldered Tumblehome

I don't design or build canoes but my hunch is that there aren't as many people taking on the time and expense of building prototype sport/touring strippers to test designs for production of high-end composite hulls. There are highly regarded designs already available for sale and there isn't a...

    Seasonal withdrawal

I used to keep the canoeing season going well into late fall and winter but now I have other things to keep me outside. Fat bike riding, squirrel hunting, day hikes, and early season alpine skiing. Still, putting the canoes away for the winter isn't something I look forward to.

I’m comparing three boats: the Clipper Prospector 14, Clipper Caribou S, and the Nova Craft Prospector 15.

My post was not contributing directly to the original poster's question, so I deleted it.

Surprising effects of fire in North America's boreal forests

That's nature for you. The diversity in plant communities, the mosaic of fire effects and the variability of ecological responses to disturbance is going to result in a range of outcomes. What the articles show are trends. And as pointed out in the climate shift article, there were noticeable...

Surprising effects of fire in North America's boreal forests

It's not so much a surprise that hardwoods are the pioneering species after a fire but the interesting part is that with the earth's climates warming the response of boreal forest conifer species may be inhibited by a warmer climate, more conducive to maintaining deciduous species for a longer...

Surprising effects of fire in North America's boreal forests

Interesting study. I could see how increased reproduction of willows, birches, and aspens in those big burn areas might provide additional forage for beavers and moose, increasing their populations. But there's likely to be a decrease in the flora and fauna that are associated with coniferous...

    Mourning Drowned Rivers

Sounds like the book could be a good read but when I used Google to search for the title and author nothing comes back that matches. There's a book entitled "Dam Nation" by Steven Grace. And a documentary by Patagonia, which has been recommended by several canoeing acquaintances.

    Canoe Makeover

I have a FoxWorx Roka as well and it's my paddle of choice when I'm paddling shallow swift water, where I might hit the bottom occasionally. I got mine from Dave Curtis. I like scuppered inner gunwales because water (and silt) drains out of the belly of the canoe better when you pick it up and...

    Mourning Drowned Rivers

And hopefully the removals will become more common across the country. One ambitious project I've always thought could be an amazing experiment is to turn Crab Creek into a bypass spawning reach to get salmon above Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River. Extremely challenging proposal and the...

    Mourning Drowned Rivers

Although your post describes river runs lost to dams, if you want to read about the drowning of one of the largest rivers in North America, I suggest "Voyage Of A Summer Sun: Canoeing The Columbia River" by Robin Cody and "A River Lost: The Life And Death Of The Columbia River" by Blaine Hardin...

Looks like a fun weekend but we already have plans. Maybe next year.

    Canoe Quiver Revamp

1983 Lady Bug, fiberglass layup, 36 lbs., still in good shape. I bought a Northstar Firebird this spring and love it but would like to find another Lady Bug in Kevlar so it'd be a bit lighter to carry. I had a chance to buy a beige one earlier this summer but my wife doesn't want me to sell her...

    Canoe Quiver Revamp

There's some good canoeing up there. It's not the Adirondack Park but still relatively undeveloped. I want to get back to the upper Connecticut River for a multi-day trip this fall if I can.

Poll: What Site Color Theme Do You Use Most Often?

Sorry, I wasn't aware of how difficult (or expensive) it was to set color themes for this website. I'll continue to use the default theme. Works just fine. Thank you for your time and effort keeping this site going.
