I'm not voting because it's unlikely I would attend anything more than a couple hours away and maybe even not then. I've never attended Canoecopia but did attend Midwest Moutaineering's spring event in Minneapolis a few times. Like Canoecopia it had been a long standing tradition but it was...

I bet many married canoeists would argue with that. "I'm going on a canoe trip. See you in a month, babe. What's that? No, I won't have any cell reception so I won't be able to call or check in. You won't be able to get ahold of me if there is a problem either. If you haven't heard from me in...

My Seattle Sombrero blew out of the back of my canoe while crossing a windy lake. I didn't think it was that big of a deal at the time but I didn't realize that 1 1/2 weeks of rain and cold were too ensue and I sure missed it. I think that's the only thing I've lost. I've found more than I've...

Sorry to hear that. Hope you guys find a good road trip with lots of stops for french fries. Alan

I'm thinking that sex might be the best way to recruit new paddlers to canoeing. Come to think of it maybe that has something to do with the proliferation of kayaks. Lots of good looking young women paddling kayaks. A lot of curmudgeonly old men paddling canoes. Not hard to figure out why young...

Lest we forget.

Good post and good points. Tandem is pretty much a no-go for me. I just don't know anyone locally that likes to paddle that much (in a canoe) so solo became my default. On the rare occasions I would find someone to paddle tandem they were generally just interested in having a fun paddle rather...

I haven't been there in 20 years but the reversing falls in Pembroke has a little used and free campsite in a nice location. You could easily set up camp and spend a few days day tripping from there. I liked that part of the coast the two times I went to Maine. Quiet and not a touristy feel at...

With the amount of rain New Mexico has been receiving this monsoon season it looks like it might be a good time to paddle the Gila. Water level appears to have been at the low end of paddleable level for a while now with a recent large spike in the last couple days. It seems that the headwaters...

I've never paddled on an erg but I can see that being the case. Sounds like you have zone 2 covered with rucking though so that's good. With the amount of time you're planning to put in on the erg I hope paddling an actual canoe will feel easy in comparison. Sounds like you've got a good plan...

Interesting results. You were certainly 'faster' at 160 spm but the increased heart rate indicates you were working harder too. I would be curious to know the results if you increased the cadence but kept the heart rate consistent with your low cadence efforts. I mentioned my running cadence...

You pronounced it TeMaGaMi I had always read Tema-Gami

I suspect if he wants the kind of money he's asking that he'll have to. It sounds like he currently has a good business that is fully staffed and that it can pretty much run day to day without him being there. They have orders on the books and outfitters they sell to regularly. That makes it a...

That didn't work for me. The little research I did indicated that Ted is the sole owner and while Bear is referred to as the co-founder he is an employee (manager) rather than partner or co-owner. No idea if that's actually true or not though. Hope he's able to find a buyer and that the...

I doubt I'll ever be traveling with it in the future but anytime you want to come down to Estherville you're welcome to try it out. Alan

Back in the day I had a couple J-boats I didn't trust myself to keep upright and I also had a great little dog that loved to paddle and I felt guilty every time I took the j-boats out for training paddles. I wanted something in between a fast tripper and a USCA C1 and couldn't find anything that...

I think you will. I've haven't met a much nicer bunch of people than the ones I met when I was canoe racing. I don't know what kind of racing is available in your neck of the woods but Minnesota has a good core group of paddlers and there are regular races through the season around Minnesota and...

I'm not sure what versions Sawyer is selling now. The last one I bought, about 10 years ago, was kind of difficult to find as it did not seem to be the most popular one. I specifically got it because it used the same large filter as their gravity filter setup and was easily removed. My initial...

It will come with practice. I tend to be a slow twitch muscle guy too but have no problem paddling a canoe at 60 spm over long distances and quicker than that over short distances. Once you get used to it I find it's considerably less tiring. A short stroke seems to use more of your core muscles...

I don't know. I hear stacked hands preached often but rarely see it practiced. Andy Triebold, another great paddler, doesn't seem to do much stacking either. Nor do I see much torso rotation.
