You have a good point. And a beautiful canoe! I had been thinking my use case for the canoe was unusual. And it may be for a typical broken down retiree in 2026. But when it was built, what I want to do with it is pretty much what the designers expected people to be doing.

    Pareidolia on canoe trips

I often hear things in the wind, waves, or rain. Sometimes it’s creatures that couldn’t actually be there, sometimes it’s music or people. And after a couple decades working in the Everglades, I see gators all the time. Occasionally even now that I have returned to the north.

While I am most likely to try and have a permanent carry thwart, @Glenn MacGrady has an elegant solution in this E. M. White repro. Simple, elegant and looks effective.

Nice way to personalize it, put the seat where it balances for your use, then the thwart where it plays well with your body, seat and paddles. I often get tied up with measurements as percentages of the boat length.

Thanks! Good to hear from someone who has used the hull in both configurations. I’ve used removable carrying thwarts before. I’m not a fan. Forgetting, misplacing, and tripping on them are some of my more dependable skills. Using one on a solo seems so logical, but I think they are for more...

Ok. It was in worse shape than I expected. But I should not be surprised. I put in a temporary wider center thwart to allow the hull to relax to its design shape, 29” was a bit short and tender for standing up and poling (it’s ok. I like swimming) but at 33” it should feel better. A lot of this...

    Hello from Michigan

I’ve done that trip a couple of times. But haven’t done the whole thing since the mid 80s! Maybe I’ll see you on the river sometime. I’ll look for that blue Mad River, I’ll be the guy trying to climb back into the capsized canoe.

I finally had the last paddle before repairs. There is a bit of work to do.

Yea. We paddled and snorkeled around a lot so picked up a few here and there. Some days maybe a few hundred, of course we were in the water more than normal people would be. We were studying Unique Aquatic Invertebrate Communities of the Inland Lakes of Isle Royale National Park.

Beautiful!. I’ve spent a lot of time on and under that lake! And many of the nearby ones. Three years of fieldwork as a field bologist up there are some of my fondest memories. If you have a mask Chickenbone lake had some amazing snorkeling a few decades ago.

First and almost last paddle of the year in the Peterborough last week. 😡😃 I messed my hand up last fall, then surgery, PT, bad Covid in the fall, and then a busy summer... Next week I’ll strip the varnish and start the restoration process. Hopefully next year we will be out a lot!

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Hopefully I’ll be able to fix up my Peterborough and spend as much time on my local waters as possible.

    Can you define these wetlands?

After 20 some years as a wetlands biologist, I’ve paddled or walked on and in many different wetlands. As mentioned above local names, map names, and even differences in terminology use or focus between cooperating entities can make them all a bit soft around the edges.

I miss paddling with my dog. My German Shorthair was basically another Canoe Sport employee back in the good old days and would love to ride along or swim as I paddled. He had some skill at getting in and out of a floating canoe.
