I figure by the time you fart around, make adjustments and gather material you could just spend the money on some load stops. I bought a 2 pair pack of yakima round bar load stops from ebay for $42 shipped to my door. I don't have a nice boat yet so don't care much about the gunnels.

With bad hips I find the kayak foot braces to be uncomfortable spreading the legs too far apart so it has to be a cross bar or nothing.

Too bad you are not closer I would take the load bars off your hands. Foolishly sold all my load bars and gutter mounts 5 years ago when I thought I was getting out of canoeing. I have spent a little over $400 (ebay, FB) piecing a rack together for the prius saving about $200.

Just like the others have said that water is cold so start saving for a dry suit. Probably plenty being sold on FB in your area.

Any thoughts on GRB Will's whitewater boat? I looks like it has more volume than a blackwater. It would be used with a bucket seat/foot brace. Not looking for a whitewater boat but nice sleek solo for lakes/large rivers.
