Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

There is a campground (reserveable on reservations.gov) with a water pump and toilet. There's a 1 - 1.5mi ADA accessible trail to the campground from the whistle stop and the glacial lake is just after that. Trail continues on the north side of the lake and up to a cabin. Lots a hikers stop by...

Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

We just toodled around in the lake. Not close enough to the glacier to worry about calving. Introduced the nieces to canoeing which they enjoyed (picture attached). Floating out the Placer is a future goal though. Some in-laws recently rafted it and said it was gentle. Sounds good!

We may have over-compensated on that portability by buying a PakCanoe 165. It's definitely nice not to have a sail on the top of the car on windy road-trip days. It fit on the train to Spencer glacier too. Portages are a breeze, though there's a funny bounce with each step as the frame poles...

Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

I have a portaging story from the Lynx Lake Loop also related to the portage harness. My canoe at the time was a Coleman "Scanoe" without a motor (94lbs, no portage yoke under the balance point). We were going to go to Eklutna for an overnight but the weather didn't look nice as we were...

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

@Alasgun Any tips on getting fish out of the net while in the canoe? I caught my limit from the south beach at the mouth of the Kenai on Satuday in about 2.5hrs. It was my second time dipnetting and it was wild having fish run so thick that they were bumping into me while I was holding the net...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

Alpackaraft was using goats to promote their boats which seem a good but less durable than canoes: https://alpackaraft.com/blog/whatever-floats-your-goat

New Canoe Enthusiast Ready to Learn and Share!

I used to live near Seattle and got into canoeing when my then girlfriend (now wife) got me to go on a trip with her to Ross Lake [1]. I'm still very much a beginner canoeist but it was was so much fun (despite some portage induced tears) that we went back for another trip shortly thereafter...

Seeking historical examples of women's canoe expeditions

Rivers Running Free US a collection of stories of womens' canoe trips, some in the early 1900s. Some are full stories other excerpts. I think most are best described as adjacent to your criteria than exactly fitting it. Enjoyable read none the less.

Is it possible to 3D print a canoe?

I don't know anything about 3D printing but suddenly found myself curious if anyone on the forum does and has any idea what it would be like to 3D print a canoe.

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

I have a PakCanoe 165 which means no gunnels and most of the structure is flexible. I think that rules out buying a stabilizer (at least without modification) since they seem to assume they can clip onto gunnels. I'll start a separate thread I'm done enough with our house remodel to have time...

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

As a relatively recent resident of Alaska who was exposed to dip netting for the first time this year, I'm enjoying reading through this to understand the purpose behind each mod (it was from shore, but I think that still counts towards being a true Alaskan). Thanks for sharing. My wife...

    Gear for technique improvement

The paddle has two sections which slide together and are held in place with a button. Unfortunately, the length isn't adjustable. It's a "Mohawk Paddle" sold by Pakboats. Thanks for this tip. I think part of my problem is the paddle is too long. I appreciate explanation on the details of the J...

    Gear for technique improvement

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like some adaptation is warranted with different paddles, but in my case there's something not quite right. Sounds like a good excuse to go back to the pond today to figure it out. I know that I enjoy seeing others' canoe pictures, so here's mine for reference...

    Gear for technique improvement

Novice canoeist here. I was out on a local pond today and was using a paddle with a wider flatter face than the inexpensive wood thing from Cabela's I normally use. So much power! But also, I found my strokes getting stuck more frequently where I'd have to just pull the paddle out any way I...
