    Hemlock SRT struggles

I own an SRT and agree you need to get some ballast in the canoe. I paddle it empty a lot and it is a lively hull. I find empty it has little initial stability and virtually no secondary stability. Keep after it, it’s a great hull. Cheers, Barry

    Cliff Jacobson

I too have several of his books. Removing the buttons from your cuffs and replacing them with Velcro to thwart pesky black flies was a stoke of genius! Barry

    Weather

Here in Altoona it’s -26f windchill and my Chessie loves it! My brother and sister-in-law are in the high peaks area of ADK’s through the weekend to back some more peaks.

    Straight shaft carbon paddle?

Old Mustache Paddles makes a really nice wood bent shaft at 15-17 oz. It’s way nicer than my carbon fiber paddles. Out of 20 some paddles it’s the first one I bought a cover for so it doesn’t get dinged in the truck. Old Mustache Paddle Sorry I missed that your looking for a straight shaft...

    Frying Pans

I don't take fresh food on long trips or trips with portages, I just take my Jetboil and boil water for dehydrated meals that I made myself. BUT....on overnight or three day trips with no portages I bring fresh food and a cooler. In that instance I don't use a fry pan, but a harrow disk style...

    Duluth style packs

I think the side panels in the box style are the way to go. Frost River packs use 18oz waxed canvas. I don’t use liners but instead use dry bags which helps keep things organized. The waxed canvas has never gotten wet inside even in multi day rain and bilge water. It could be a pain to sew...

    Duluth style packs

Patrick, IMO, 5000 cu. In. (About 80 liters) is a good all rounder size. But I travel with a dog and typically bring a larger tent that I wouldn’t typically back pack with. I also have a lot of bedding like two exped down mats, two exped multi pads on the tent floor, wool blankets to cover the...

Bob Foote (and others) Open Canoeing the Grand Canyon

I learned my canoe roll from Bob Foote. Used that roll on Yough, cheat, gauley, Stony, Ottawa rivers ect. I only paddled with class v kayakers back than and was nicknamed Big Water because I always ran the kayak lines. I will say that big whitewater ultimately is more fun in a kayak though...

How much do you baby your composite boat on shore? (susceptibility to scratches?)

I have a black gold bell and gel coat Hemlock. I don’t drag them around on land and if setting down on a hard surface I try to be light handed. If you paddle it it will get scratches. I hit rocks/logs all the time on rivers. Who cares? Most of those scratches can’t be seen when paddling...
