    New Footbrace for Swiftie

That looks like the foot brace from Northstar Canoes. Nearly three years ago, I installed the same foot brace on my Northwind Solo using the epoxy glue included in the kit. The foot brace works excellently. I have put it through heavy use, and the glue shows no signs of failure.

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

A friend and I drove 2.5 hours north to view the eclipse in the 99.6% totality zone near Bradford, VT, The traffic on Rt. 91 in Vermont was heavy as predicted. Given how heavy the traffic was, we decided not to drive to the 100% totality zone. The sky did not darken as much from where we...

Is there a doctor in the house?

IMO, anyone with the name Black Fly needs no help, at least none that I can offer him unless he wants to learn how to let black flies bite him gracefully😉.

Is there a doctor in the house?

Too funny, Glenn. I've had two incidents in remote locations where I rendered first aid to an injured person, only to learn afterward that the medical assessment and subsequent first aid I rendered were observed by medical doctors, who did not intervene for legal reasons. One event occurred...

Is there a doctor in the house?

I am a non-medical doctor with an MS & PhD in medical and aquatic entomology. As one may surmise from my avatar and screen name, I am a black fly kind of guy, although I have also dabbled in mosquitoes and other aquatic insects. Despite a nearly 50-year obsession with black flies, I remain...

Hiking trails on canoe lakes / routes

I have two favorite peaks that I enjoy hiking while on paddling trips in the Adirondacks. The first is an unnamed peak that overlooks Lows Lake and Grass Pond near the western end of the lake. It is just west of the summit of Grass Pond Mountain. View of unnamed peak (on the left) from...

How to carry canoe on F150 Supercrew short bed with trailer?

Like Coldfeet, I have a 2017 Ford F150 Super Crew Cab with a short bed and tonneau cover. I have carried canoes between 12 feet and 18 feet (and kayaks) on Thule racks attached to the cab's roof without any problems on the three F150 Super Crew Cabs I have owned. I use square load bars of...

    Photo of the day

With the temperatures in the mid-30s, brilliant sunshine, and minimal wind, my two friends and I enjoyed a wonderful New Year's Day paddle on ice-free Tully Lake in north-central Massachusetts. I was in my Northwind Solo, while one friend was in his Hornbeck, and the other was in his...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

It was a mixture of canned corned beef hash and dehydrated scrambled eggs & cheese. The biscuits were also tasty, but I only got to eat two out of the five I made. An unknown critter snagged the remaining three, which I had left out to cool, but left them unguarded while I spent a few minutes...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

Even food that doesn't look all that appealing tastes great when cooked in my Cold Handle pan. 😊
