Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

I love my Trillium, and since you’ve already said speed isn’t your top priority I would certainly recommend it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a quick little canoe but definitely doesn’t have the same glide at faster speeds as say the Magic. I’m 145 lbs, and I find on windy days I have to add a...

    Getting in and Getting out

This is what I do as well. But I'm 6ft with a fairly narrow canoe, so I'm not certain that would work for everyone.

    Hello from Central WI.

Welcome. There's a lot of knowledgeable folk here. I'm not one of them, but if you post about your build I'll certainly read it.

    Nor'easter Snow Blast, Feb. 22-23, 2026

According to the map we got about 9 inches, which sounds about right. Looks like I was just outside of the worst of the accumulation. They got about 14" in the town I work, so driving into that Monday morning was an adventure.

Thanks for taking the time to write all of this, it was an enjoyable read.

Kayak paddle width question - gunwale / water level / max width

I think you’ll get much better advice here than on a sizing chart. I've linked another discussion below from here that you might find helpful. https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/kayak-paddle-length-for-wider-canoe.130521/

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

I'm not sure why, but there's something I find quite awe-inspiring (for lack of a better term) about a body of water the size of Lake Erie being almost completely frozen over. Those of you that live further north probably see frozen lakes more frequently, but it doesn't happen much here. The...

Pack canoeists, do you use portage thwarts or yokes?

So this only just occurred to me today after writing my response earlier. I got my Trillium converted from a pack seat to a standard canoe seat with 4" seated drops, so I'm not sure my current yoke setup is going to work. I guess I'll have to figure that out.

Pack canoeists, do you use portage thwarts or yokes?

For short distances I just throw it over a shoulder. The Trillium is 27 lbs so I can manage that. For longer distances it digs into the shoulder and gets uncomfortable. That’s when I use a detachable yoke, I got a wood one from Northstar. I initially got the yoke with foam on it; it was not...

    Hello from NW PA

Welcome! I've been on the Conemaugh-Kiski River trail a few times, but not quite up that far. It's a nice paddle when the water levels are decent. Though it looks like the canoe in that picture took take a scrape or two from a rock.

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

So I actually found the Impression under Canoe>Solo Canoeing. I thought that was a weird place for it, but I was at work so I didn't have much time to read through everything. Now I'm even more amused that they have identical paddle with two different names for the length. Back to the original...

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

Bending Branches makes a canoe specific double bladed paddle. It comes in 260 and 280. I’ve never used one so I couldn’t say what the difference is. https://www.bendingbranches.com/collections/solo-canoeing/products/impression-solo

    Canoeing in the Winter

“Canoeing in winter! I want to do that, I bet this post will be helpful and informative!” Not what I was expecting, but I got a good chuckle.

    Help me pick a tandem

I have the Northstar Trillium in blacklite. I take it down rivers with mild rapids (1+ at most probably), and it’s definitely taken some scrapes and dings on rocks. For what it’s worth I think it’s probably more durable than it’s weight would imply. But an email/call to Northstar might be your...

Biophobia is on the Rise—According to a Review of 196 Studies

While I agree with many of the points in the article, Gamma I agree with you that the supporting evidence is a bit of a stretch. They have a conclusion and then looked for evidence to support it, which is bad science. I also have opinions on labeling things phobias and using other catch phrases...
