    Best tripping coffee mug?

I’m a tea guy, I have a yeti that I’ve had since they came out. It lives in my truck. I also have both a large and small stainless vacuum thermos the OR made way back in the day. I use both of those weekly. I’ll never get rid of those. They have been on the top of a lot of mountains, I don’t...

    Need New Food

The other one I always take is Spanish chorizo. It’s a hard dry sausage, unlike Mexican which is a raw sausage. I like the “hot” variety when I have the choice. It’s also good heated in a pan with eggs or potatoes, or both. Most of the time I’m just cutting off hunks with my knife and eating...

    Need New Food

My daughter is a D1 soccer goalkeeper, and my homemade “teriyaki” jerky is her favorite protein on the planet, dehydrated strawberries and strawberry or mango fruit leather are right behind it. I probably make 10 pounds of jerky a month. That’s about what fills my Harvest Made dehydrator.

    Need New Food

I’m big into homemade jerky (never gets old), I also make a variety of dehydrated fruit, and homemade fruit rolls. If weight isn’t the biggest issue, apples and mandarins.

    I did. Thx

    Obsolete Stuff

I’m still, stubbornly, map and compass. I learned as a Boy Scout, reinforced by Voyager school in the ADKs, and now teach it to current scouts. I also still occasionally carry and use a candle lantern just because.

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

19 years old. I saved for 3 years to buy a Wenonoah sundowner.

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

    I say carry!

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

This is how I learned (even before voyager school), and yknpdl was one of my voyager instructors! Doesn’t mean there are not other “proper” ways.

    Winter footwear preferences?

I alternate between a pair of Kenetrak pack boots and a pair of the higher end (forget the model) Muck hunting boots. The mucks are great b/c they are warm, waterproof, and easy to get on and off. The pack boots are better if I’m snowshoeing. They lace up and fit a little snugger. Both come up...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

Canoes almost exclusively. I’m in RI and paddled a Nigel Dennis sea kayak for a long while (still own it, it’s so customized to me, I don’t think I could sell it if I wanted to). My knees can’t take it for very long anymore. My exception is my Jackson kayak for fly fishing. It’s designed for...

Useless/Unused Canoe or Camping Gear You've Had

I have far too many ways to purify water to just use my platypus. I also have a thing with stoves! I should admit to a gear problem in general. I’m 50 and have in the outdoors in some form since birth. It started with hunting, fishing, and canoeing with my grandfather and uncles, moved to Boy...

Need New Tricks for Lightening the Food Barrel

Many times dinner is my only “true meal”. I’m totally ok most days eating GORP, dried fruit, homemade fruit leather, and homemade beef jerky starting when I get up. Dinner is commercial freeze dried, or most of the time, home dehydrated. If there are no portages, all bets are off for meals...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I rarely portage more than a mile and a half. I still prefer my traditional packs (Duluth, Frost River). I really like my FR with the calfskin padded straps. I use the tump on either. Most of my gear is on the lighter “backpacking” end of the spectrum. I use a hammock, and eat a mix of...
