    Tip top Susquehanna

The first section from the Mill Street Dam at Mill St in Cooperstown, Up until the Compton Bridge on County Highway 11C is the only part you might have trouble with as being to shallow in low water. As of right now you could float thru (we've had a wet summer in our area) no problem. If it does...

which foldable solar panel for canoeing and canoe camping

Kahel – I also have the Big Blue Solar Powa 28 with the ammeter. https://bigblue-tech.com/products/28w-sunpower-solar-charger-with-ammeter. I have used this for two years now and has worked okay. I to have used just two power banks with great results on 7 day and...

    Oswegatchie Questions

You never really know what the vibe is year to year, week to week on those DEC sites. I can say I was just around the corner and spent two weeks at Cranberry Lake. None of the DEC sites were occupied (or looked like they recently had been) on Cranberry for the two week stay I was there. Although...

Roe Jan Creek canoe race (Germantown, NY)

I just got informed yesterday that I'm being forced to work next Saturday from 4 to midnight or I would definitely do this with you. I haven't been on the water yet this year. I'm no racer (actually hate racing canoes - defeats the whole purpose of a canoe in my opinion, but to each their own) I...

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

I was starting to wonder if bent gunnels is a Texas thing. I don't think I've seen so many wavy line canoes for sale like that. That one should serve you well. Nice find, by far the best choice out of the choices you've shown.

    Float bag recommendation

I've been using BPM whitewater 32" bags. Going on year three with them - still going strong. I like how they are covered with a rip stop material to make them a little tougher. Using them in a 16' Old Town thou.... https://bpm-whitewater.com/shop/ols/products/3d-traditional-canoe-airbags-pair

    What are you reading?

A decent fictional book I enjoyed was "The Corps" by W.E.B. Griffin. It's a 10 book series about the Untied States Marine Corps before and during the years of world war 2 and the Korean War.

Fixing bulkheads and replacing gunwales on '93 kevlar malecite

Yeah you don't want to use "Great Stuff", the stuff is garbage once wet. The Locktite brand is for water tight applications. I'm sure there are other closed cell spray foam brands out there by now - But I know the Locktite brand is closed cell foam.

Fixing bulkheads and replacing gunwales on '93 kevlar malecite

Jffdejongh You really don't want to use spray foam that is an open cell foam... You want a closed cell foam. Most of the spray foams at the hardware store (doors / windows / gaps) are open cell foam. Open cell foam will let moisture in and once wet, the rot begins. There is a better spray foam...

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

Yeah sorry to go off on this tangent from your picture. 1st time - Two weeks with 2 planned relax days for the choosing. 2nd time two weeks with no rest days. 3rd time, ever shallow which extended the trip by 2 days. All in all I think its like 22 portages and some lining. The longest being...

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

Raquette River is a great trip in High water. I've run the entire river three times, starting at Raquette Lake South Inlet and ending at the St. Lawrence River. All three times I did the trip the last week of May. Chilly but bug free

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

Knew I recognized that landing.. I feel the same as you - don't really care for Raquette Lake but Forked Lake is a little gem of a place. However I have spent some great nights at Tioga Point in the off season.

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

I used to use a Garmin GPS. Past 5 years I've just been using my smartphone with Google Earth. Really I still prefer to use a good paper map and compass on long trips. But the laziness in me, makes it to easy to just pop open the screen on my phone and see my currently location without...
