Sin - or- how to violate a canoe

Not getting feet wet! People trying too get in and out of a canoe without touching water. arraragh! Drives me insane (although its legit when its snowing out!). Fancy colours? What's wrong with colour? I try and buy bright colour stuff cause otherwise I look like a boring old turtle turd. Men's...

What has the world come to? A retail rant

I have a lot of the same feelings as people here...but in some ways I am happy that MEC broke my customer loyalty. Once MEC started to go all "urban" I was pissed and searched out other stores. I hated MEC, but now I am happy that I found all these other stores and other brands. Plus if MEC...

    Favorite dehydrated/semi-lightweight camp dinner?

Anything with dried veg. We just buy the bags of flash frozen veg from the grocery store dump into a dehydrator, then use them for different meals. Along with dried pasta sauce you can do a lot of different meals from just those two things. Chili with TVP and bannock. With dried tortellini...

    Lake Superior Provincial Park

Never been to Lake Superior Provincial Park but have been to Pukaskwa just to the north. I can assume that some of the Lake Superior paddling conditions are similar so: -prepare for cold water, like really cold water. Even if you don't end up in the water, the cold will creep up through the...

What have you lost in a capsize?

Never lost anything on a capsize, but did find 5 litres of water in my 5 litre drybag carrying camera batteries!

    From our front door!!

I guess I should say Minto to Dawson because it seems to veer away from the highway. But I guess the absence of rapids on a large river means that there may be more traffic than I originally thought? RE your other images Canotrouge...looks like Whitehorse is a fun place!

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

So that beaver dam going into Tom Thomson: Looked like this, this past November. It was good 4 feet tall, icey and dicey!

    From our front door!!

I have never paddled a 20 footer before, but have always found any river - river tripping canoe to be sluggish. But I paddle more flat water, in skinny asymmetrical canoes, so it should be expected. Something about Royalex too, feels slow. Was considering the Carmacks to Dawson because on...

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

Great trip report! Yeah the Hudson's Bay canoe is pretty flash...Langford makes them for HBC if you have 10 grand!

    Tripper "Hacks"

Not exactly a hack but the "log cabin" fire instead of the "tipi fire" is way better for getting a fire going and if burning wet wood...although if wood is dry you will burn more wood. Wrap all your food in wax paper taped with masking tape. It's super light, creates no garbage plus it's good...

    From our front door!!

Great report! Great pics! Thinking about doing the Carmacks to Dawson section next summer, possibly with kids. Why not the 20footers again? Are they like paddling a barge?

    Sport or Lifestyle?

yup that pretty much sums it up. Something about the sound of forests and lakes seems to reset my scrambled brain. Puts me at ease. It really is the sound over anything else too, and canoeing lets us go to places where there is no white noise of cities and roads for long periods of time with no...

What do paddlers do when the water is frozen?

I have one as well. The key is to set it up for one cut, say 90degress and leave it there. Changing anything but the depth of angle will mess with it. I would also forget about wide crosscuts and save that for a table saw. Check out this link, its what I use to tune the saw and its pretty good...

Come on Baby Light My Fire!

Same. UCO matches are the best thing I have found to spark the fire. They burn like a flare for about 5 seconds. I also carry a hunter orange zippo (easy to see), and there are always Bic lighters stashed in various pockets and pouches. To get the fire going though, I usually just use small...
