Hi,
I'm planning on a 5 day trip in Maine starting May 6th, any ideas on how to find out if Flagstaff lake is free of ice before I get there? I'm planning on bringing my small wall tent with wood stove to do a solo base camp type trip sticking close to shore and camp, maybe some fishing.
Thanks
Robin

Yup.. bookmark this site.

Flagstaff is apt to be nasty. The winds are up here at home every day. And the ice persists though it will be out within the week. Flagstaff is about 80 miles from here. From the data I note that Flagstaff is about two weeks later than my lake for ice out. So you ought to be good to go.

The Dead River north of the dam is awfully nice up to Grand Falls. Which has terrific fishing..(I am not a fisherperson, but others say it's fantastic.

Have to have a discussion with a beaver or gang of them. Can't wait to find where the new lodge and dam is. Curious as to why they picked trees not close to the water.. Ice out is IMMINENT here.

LOL.. I am reading about a moonshiner and canoe poler in the Everglades, though you won't find me there in the hot season. Tomorrow, beaver sleuthing...

West Grand Lake in Maine is just about open. I am still waiting for my favorite witch Chesuncook to open.

Allagash River is open, flowing hard, but Chesuncook is the best gauge for lakes near the Allagash Headwaters as it's near Chamberlain.

I am glad I do not have to live in Minnesota.. They are bummed.

I just found out tonight that my trip has been moved up a week (I babysit my grandson on Mondays and there family cruise starts Sunday to my surprise), so I'm headed out this Saturday for 7 days in northern Maine.

I love camping in shoulder season weather in my wall tent, wood stove and canoe, and if the ice isn't out on Flagstaff Lake I'll make due....been a long winter and I'm ready to go. Looking forward to some serious brook trout fishing and some moose horn shed hunting back off the beaten trail.

Yikes!!! 7 days out cooking over the wood stove in my cold handle frying pan. I will be spending this week getting my gear ready, I just need to resist overpacking.

Watch Chesuncook Lake.. I don't think ice is out yet. But you certainly can drive over logging roads to camping on the South side of Flagstaff or by the dam.

Chesuncook is much farther east but similar height and latitude.
