I’m planning to paddle the St John River ( Maine) mid May. What paper maps ( besides the Gazeteer) are available for this region ?

Hi JD,

Unfortunately this is the ideal map and out of print since the company no longer exists. Hopefully you can find one or more on the internet. Waterproof, 24”x 36” 2003, all you need.

1988, wife and I parked at Kit Pelletier’s, now Norm L’Italien, St. Francis ME. A float plane flew us into Baker Lake. Float planes are not able to due fly-ins as in the past due to the 9-11 tragedy. Anyone know why?

Where will you put-in and what are your shuttle plans?

Hope you have the best trip ever!

Hi JD & welcome to the forum. I can't help with maps but it looks like Dirigo & Glenn have got you covered. Enjoy the trip and, if you're so inclined, we love trip reports around here. (Helps build the bucket list and we get to live vicariously.) :)

Thanks for the help.

I did an Allagash trip last year using the services of Norm at Pelletier’s. This year I hope to put in at Fifth St John pond if the conditions allow.

Thank you Glenn. You’re a wonderful moderator of this forum, ever watchful and helpful. Fancy computer skills too!

JD, you’re welcome and hope the water levels allow the trip you plan on. Getting into your desired put-in with road conditions and water levels is often the crux of a spring run of the northern rivers.

Throughout winter into spring I check https://maine-webcams.com for a visual of the St. John ice conditions. Type in Dickey Bridge for the bridge visual. For snow depth use https://www.weather.gov/nerfc/snow for all of New England- may take a few hours to update each day.

https://northmainewoods.org is also a huge resource for knowledge. Years ago NMW would send out a packet of information to those who requested such.

Does anyone know why fly-ins are not allowed anymore? Our 1988 fly-in cost $370.00. Two paddlers, two canoes and dunnage.
