    Another Marathon Boat

Interesting. I wouldn't go to light on a TWS boat though. It's going to take a beating along the way. Good luck on your build and your Texas Water Safari!

    Thoughts on shortening a canoe

Just sell it and buy a boat that's more like what you want.

    WRC strip thickness

So, what's everyone's preference for strip thickness? For my last boat I used 1/4" strips. It's a great boat but I think 1/4" was just too thick. Is anybody using 3/16"? How does that work out? Anybody using anything thinner? Just trying to get as much weight out of my current build as...

Minimizing weight in my next build.

Wow, great idea BWCA66. I never thought about using the first boat as a mold for the second boat. That would be a huge time saver for sure. Any suggestions on resources that I could check out for information about how to do something like that? I was planning to make some...

Minimizing weight in my next build.

Hello boat builders (and everyone else too). I'm planning to build another boat later this winter. I'm going to build a second version of the last boat that I build (knock off of a Sawyer Shockwave). I have a set of forms that someone lifted off of an old Shockwave. I built this boat winter...

    Curtis solo canoe

Has anyone ever paddled a Curtis Vagabond solo canoe or know anyone who paddles one??? I'm currently looking at a solo Curtis and I believe it to be a Vagabond based on the length, owner says it's about 14' 6". Anyway, any reviews, recommendations, opinions, concerns, complaints? I'd like to...

    Installing gunnels?

So, now a couple more questions. To the builders who have glued gunnels - how long did you leave them clamped? How long does it take for the epoxy to gain sufficient strength to hold the gunnels to the curve of the hull? For the builders who prefer screws - do you counter sink the screws and...

    Installing gunnels?

Well, I for sure have a big pile of C clamps. I'm guessing if you used clamps you just left them a little lose, or at least not real tight? I was worried that if I didn't clamp them tight that they might allow the gunnels to slip out of their position.

    Installing gunnels?

So, I'm about ready to install gunnels on a wood strip canoe that I am building. Plat is to glue the gunnels on with thickened epoxy. My question is - what is a good way to clamp the gunnels in place while the epoxy sets? Guess I could use C clamps but it seems like that may apply too much...

    Finishing Ash gunnels???

Yes I know that removing the gunnels would be a problem and would require some delicate chisel work at the least. I doubt I'll ever need to remove them, I was just thinking that installing them with epoxy would indeed eliminate a source of water reaching voids behind the gunnels and causing...

    Finishing Ash gunnels???

Now just to clarify, when you guys say varnish I assume that you are talking about a spar urethane??? Or is it just spar varnish, I guess both are available. Jim Dodd - I had absolutely planned to coat the backsides of the inner and outer gunnels with epoxy then I had planned to glue them on...

    Finishing Ash gunnels???

Ok guys --- lots of conflicting information floating around. What's the best way to finish new Ash gunnels? Oil, polyurethane, epoxy??? What holds up best? What offers the best protection? Thanks john R

    Hog back canoe

Memaquay, yes the hull of this boat is made with western red cedar. I ripped the strips out myself and they are mostly quarter sawn but some are probably flat sawn as well. No other problems with deformation other than this hogback. Jim Dodd - yes the build was stemless and yes I did leave the...

    Hog back canoe

Well deer fly the concave curve appeared as soon as the hull was removed from the forms so I don't think it has anything to do with the support or lack there of once the hull was flipped right side up. There again cruiser the hull did spend a couple weeks waiting for it's inside glass layer but...
