Box Turtles

This is for real; no joke; but I laughed long & loud when I first discovered them in our backyard.JOKER

Joker 1942, you made me look through my photos of box turtles I took over the years. The first one shows 4 male box turtles fighting (I fifth one didn't fit the frame). The one on the bottom had already been flipped upside down. You can see the indentation in the belly identifying the males. Turtle wax would be an effective prophylactic I guess

The second photo shows the winner taking it all.

The last one shows the female dragging the male for possibly hours. The females mate only every couple of years and can store the sperm for up to seven years.

We picked up a turtle on a canoe trip when my kids were small. Added one my son found in a field. Those turtles lived for decades. One died, my ex wife released the other. Kids named them Gertrude and Herman, but Herman laid an egg, so I think the names were mixed up. Love seeing turtles of all ilks sunning on a log.
