Stacked enchiladas in a Dutch Oven

Last night I made one of my favorite river trip meals. It seemed hot out side so I did not build a fire. Instead I used a cast iron DO in the overn. Layers of ripped corn tortillas, shredded chicken, black olives, chopped onions and bell peppers, and mild green chilies. Add some garlic and...

    1951 Old Town guide 18

I am giving up my cedar and canvas canoe. Second owner. It has been on a lot of rivers in the last 30 years. Canvas is off. I have removed 7 ribs and shaped new ones. I have some clear white cedar to replace a couple of planks. Copper stem bands, wicker seats. Make any offer. Nevada

Sometimes I just want to paddle an OT Tripper

Sure they are big and heavy, but they can carry a load. They are very beamy and forgiving boats with full ends. They are deep. My balance is not as good as it was. Might have to go find one.

    Camping at Home

I have never liked sheets. Depending on the temperatures I sleep mostly with wool blankets on top of an old sleeping bag. Cold nights in the 50s I sleep under an old summer weight sleeping bag unzipped. Really cold nights I sleep in a synthetic bag rated for about 35-40 degrees. In summer a...

    Inwale scarfs.

I am right at the point of replacing two pieces of inwale on the OT Guide 18. They are 1 x 3/4 inch pieces of stock that looks like ash. What ratio do you like for scarfs? I am thinking around 6:1, maybe 8:1.

    Drift boat followed me home.

Yesterday I went to town and drove through a new neighborhood. There was a 2002 Hyde aluminum drift boat sitting there with all the right stuff. 16 feet, carbon fiber oars with counter weights, 3 dry boxes under the seats, compartment in the bow. Very well outfitted. I went to the bank and...

Quality of Cedar for Rebuilding Canoes.

Today I received an order of 3 3/4 inch planks for the floor of my 1953 Old Town. The red cedar looks really good. It is clear and has tight grain. It looks to be quarter sawn. The rib stock I got from the same place, Island Falls Canoe in Maine. The white cedar ribs have flat grain, very few...

Seat and thwarts in a solo canoe

I have been paddling the Old Town Canadienne ( the 15 footer) from the bow seat turned around. Even with my dog and a small cooler in the bow the boat is not trimmed very well. I like day paddling this boat, but will also use it for overnight trips. I am planning to add a more center seat and...

    A Good Paddling Site

Thanks to everyone on this site for being positive, upbeat and encouraging. I spent some time over on the purist canoeing site, I am sure you can guess which one. I got tired of negative feedback and people telling me I was going to fail, and all the reasons my ideas were no good. It makes...

    OT Canadienne for solo

Last fall I found a kevlar Canadienne in good shape, the smaller one at 15'7". I paid $250 bucks for it. After some repair work with epoxy and a fresh coat of paint it looks really good. I have paddled it a few times from the bow seat with my dog and a cooler for ballast. The boat only has...

Rafting Rivers to Improve Rapids Reading Skills

I used to spend a lot of time rafting. It can be very exciting compared to canoeing and sometimes death defying, but it is easy to bring a comfortable amount of gear. I am heading out for a week long trip in June and I am very enthused about it. I wonder if any members of the forum have tried...

Why do so many newbies have no fear?

Last time out I had some flat water paddlers on a river trip. Several of them had plenty of time in canoes but seemed to have little respect for moving water. A lady in her late fifties was talking about running some more difficult rivers in Oregon with some friends. "I have no fear of moving...

How do you chose a crew for longer canoe trips?

I thought I knew something about this topic until this summer. Now I am ready to listen to some advice. It is becoming obvious why there are so many solo paddlers around here. What do you look for in potential crew members?
