Early Morning Birding on the Toronto Islands.

Loved the heron assortment. They are migrating now and very hungry in prep for the journey.. It was astonishing to learn that here they not only fish but hunt in fields for mice and chipmunks.

    Adirondack Paddles

Because there is limited river paddling there are few outfitters who do shuttles in the Adirondacks. I know you come from river country so this may be quite different.. When are you planning your trip? St Regis does some shuttles and they are useful on the NFCT Saranac RIver part.. However...

    Downeast Lakes Water Trail, Maine

That is a fun area. I lauched from Ellesmere Landing and made my way to Scraggly through Junior several years ago. On my way back I investigated that port between Pocumcus and Sysladobsis.. No one there but it vibed party spot. Is there still an old sunk boiler there?

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

Oh its a good cautionary tale and I agree with the lack of soundness for that Mistral.. It gets confusing. There are Herons. My Swift Heron has nothing to do with an Old Town Heron

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

Loon Works had a Mistral.. Nothing to do with Esquif. Loon Works Mistral was a 15 foot flatwater tripper made in the traditional rib and plank covered with Dacron. It was related to the composite Bell Merlin II. Tom built relatively few Mistrals as there wasn't as much demand for trippers as...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

I think the costs of a rescue pale in comparison to the costs later which will make you lose any hair you currently possess!

Touch up painting a wood/Dacron Loon Works

Any update? I will see its original owner tomorrow. She may ( just may) remember the filler used. Meanwhile its sad when two other boats of hers come to my house. Sometimes, even though its not likely we will ever use things again, they are hard to part with. We have the room to store...

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

Why don't you ask others particularly CEW about the variability.. It was not one piece of anecdotal information. I find your remarks inappropriate. Its fine to have a favorite line of boats. There is a LONG history of dirty laundry and I will not begin to go there. And the laundry has many...

It was unused. Whether or not it assumed the shape right off the mold I do not know.. It had zero rocker and maybe half an inch of hog. Not a slam of workmanship if you are thinking that was my intent but these things can happen with hand laid up boats under certain weather conditions. I find...

Gumpus comparisons are really valid only when all other variables are held constant. For us that means we can only compare boats to us. Not me or you. We have to have the same factors. paddle, wind, waves, wind direction. That is a tough call. The Osprey is said to be very wind sensitive and...

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

I bought it used. It was hogged. It was mint. The only other owner had never paddled it as right after he bought it he was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer and died within two months. Surprising hull shapes are not uncommon coming off a mold.. The Aquaterra Spectrum was the worst kayak...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

Like who for the for profit entity? I don't think that ever entered the equation here.

Hand laid and vacuum bagged layups are subject to a lot of variability. My Peregrine had negative rocker. At a canoe symposium we chalklined the overturned hull Top speed ; theoretical Hull Speed. It can be overcome by some very high horsepower paddlers and on the other end lower horsepower...

    Maine Canoe Symposium

I have never believed in Peak color. The red maples were done a long time ago but the oaks haven't started and the beech are just turning gold. I am only 20 miles away; it takes some time to get through S Paris.. I do like the color when the hackmatacks turn. That is in about two weeks from now.

A History of David Yost's Solo Tripping Canoes by Charlie Wilson

Methodology is not uniform. For example there is no standard method of measuring rocker. Some measure the difference between waterline at the stem and at the middle. Others use a 12 inch measurement from the stem. Waterline widths depend on volume of the submerged part. Some builders used to...
