    Sealine dry portage bag question

The person or persons responsible for the colour selection at MEC need to be replaced, they are obviously colour blind! The quality of the gear is mostly very good but the colours......yuck! This applies to virtually all the MEC branded gear (and much of the clothing).

    Shipping of Yakima round bars

Just to add, virtually all carriers have added significant extra charges for oversize items over the past year or two. This has hit sellers of golf clubs, fishing rods and similar items really hard, in some cases it has doubled shipping costs. Relevant to people here would be the cost to ship...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

Around here a serviette is paper and a napkin is cloth as in "I can't afford to eat there, it's a cloth napkin joint" (in the food service trade "fine dining). When you pull a section of Paper Towel off the roll, if you fold it and place on the table it becomes a serviette.

Seeking historical examples of women's canoe expeditions

Mina Hubbard in 905 is a classic story. Mina traveled with her male guide but she was in charge. This was a follow up to the ill fated Hubbard-Wallace expedition in 1903 in which her husband Leonidas died. https://www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/exploration/hubbard-expedition-labrador.php...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

Only Americans use ˈpȯr-tij (at least every (US) east coaster I've every paddled with) We (Canadians) do not sit on a stoop, it's a porch or veranda. We do relax on a chesterfield not a couch or sofa (but that usage is fading away). More stuff to learn before you visit Canada Eh...

    Sealine dry portage bag question

You should probably buy the biggest available (110/115 litre) then add a smaller (60/65) one to your collection. Not as your main pack but for secondary use consider one of the many duffle style bags. You can spend a lot to get one that has waterproof zippers or get the much cheaper roll top...

https://www.viarail.ca/en/explore-our-destinations/stations/ontario/missanabie You wind your way through Dog Lake, over the height of land portage into Crooked Lake and then one more portage in Missinabie Lake. Do you have the Hap Wilson guidebook? It's full of good info on the entire route...

    Missainabi Question

Early June should be no problem at all (except for the horrendous bugs). Overall the snowpack was a bit light this winter but there was quite a bit of new snow in the last 2 weeks. I don't think there will be any issues on the upper sections (south of Mattice), On my two trips it was...

What's the oldest lake in the world?

I haven't but a few years ago I was mapping out a fantasy route from eastern China through Mongolia and then north through Baika and continuing north to the Arctic Ocean. If I remember correctly the total distance was about 5,000km (about 3,100 miles).

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

I only use the free version of Caltopo. Because I used it so much a few years ago I paid for the basic sub (they call it mobile) but it added nothing that I was interested in. To get some usable bonus features you need the $50 or $100 subs and even for those most of the extras are only available...

    Trade Wars to Affect Tripping?

Canada is happy to have as many Americans as possible come to Canada and spend their money here. There are definitely affects of tariffs on travel but it's not US visitors to Canada it's the fact that many Canadians are choosing not to visit the US and if they must, to spend as little money...

    Permits for Missainabi River

Presume you are taking the "Budd Car" from Sudbury to Missinaibi Station. (be aware there are two Via Rail stations in Sudbury). When booking with Ontario Parks your Starting point would be Missinaibi Lake because that is where the park starts. The portion from the train to the lake is Crown...

    Rectangular Bear Can

The Mountain House Pro Pack are just a "scam" (I really dislike using that word, it gets tossed out so often that it has become meaningless) The Pro Pack meals a slightly more than half the weight of the regular bags because they contain just a bit more than half the amount of food. They are...

PortagePal to carry paddles and fishing rods

I can see a couple of uses for this thing (none would apply to me) You and your buddy are bushwacking into a small lake in search of trout, you are not "portaging", your boat is staying at the other end (lake/river), you could bundle up your rods and if there was a boat stashed at the other end...
