Hello to all from Upstate NY

Welcome John. I'll agree that that's a nice looking ride that you've got. I'm looking forward to retirement myself but I think I'm about 5 years behind you. Post trip reports as you can & I'll live vicariously for a bit. -Steve

    Over Maximum Load

Like most of us, there are probably things in your pack that go unused the entire trip. Look back on previous trips and think hard about what went unused then, as has been encouraged previously; be ruthless. Regardless of those decisions, I would urge you to rethink the use of rocks for...

    Ally (Bergans) vs. Pakcanoes

Never messed with either either but a trailer was my first though as well. Maybe an enclosed trailer for the scooter and strap the canoe on top of that? Would also look pretty cool going down the highway with the bike on one side and the canoe on the other. Welcome back.

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Cool. I was feeling like a bit of a sissy for mapping every campsite location I can find on the inReach last week. Personally, I like to know where potential campsites are. Not that I plan anything out in advance, I always look for undocumented ones as well and I'm not at all opposed to some...

    Black Cherry Phoenix

It's awesome that they were willing to humor you and that is, indeed, a handsome boat. The Cherry will probably darken as it ages too so it will keep getting better looking with the years. Congrats.

    Badger Finally!

I'll second the Watco Teak oil. IIRC, they put a coat or two on at the factory but I'd do another (possibly 2 depending on how quickly the 1st soaks in) before you leave. After that, a coat before storing for the winter will work for most of us. If you get out a lot, throw a coat on in early...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

It's probably important to remember that media needs viewership and Kevin, therefore, has to write articles in a way that people will read, comment on them & share with others. Mission accomplished &, may I add; extremely well done. It's certainly possible to just take off without a plan and...

Back to the crater (this time for real?) Manicouagan Reservoir

Certainly sounds like it. Hopefully we'll get some video too. He hasn't posted in awhile. (https://www.youtube.com/@recped)

    Two old paddles

A syringe should work for the epoxy. You probably won't need a needle though, just fill the crack, squeeze the 2 sides together & scrape off the excess while the epoxy is still green (24 hours or so). Interesting construction method for sure. Looks like someone got a really nice fit when...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Hmm... my initial thought was "I wouldn't want to preview campsites" but then I remember that I spend hours reading trip reports here & other sites, pour over paddleplanner.com and eagerly look at every picture that anyone uploaded. I guess I'll settle for not having to reserve sites but that...

Roof rack that can hold two canoes

Stop at Lowe's & have them cut two 2x2x8s down to 6 feet. While in the store, find a bag of heavy zip ties & zip tie the 2x2s to the cross pieces of the rack & then throw both canoes up there & drive home. (Lowe's will also have extra paracord & ratchet straps) Sure, it'll be wider than the 4...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

I'm not as young as I'd like to be but I'm still younger than I'm gonna be.

Mike Galt Lotus Caper Canoe for Sale

Side benefit of Alan's plan might be that the trip to North America to shop for, paddle & acquire all of those used canoes might be tax deductible (depending on your local regulations). Seems like business expenses to me and it's not really your fault if the business merely breaks even...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Update: I'm still working on this and hoping to get there in 2026. Right now I'm compiling maps and I posted my process in this thread instead of here because I felt the information might be useful anywhere and it was more searchable in a mapping thread.

    Source for Canadian Maps

I'm not sure if you carry a plb or not but I'll include this on Tony's thread in case someone else is struggling with finding / making good maps: I've been working on putting together some maps for Wabakimi next summer as I've been less than enamored with what I've been able to find. The maps...

Bogue Chitto River - South Central Mississippi

Good pictures & it's nice to see an area that I'm unlikely to paddle in person. (and, if I do, I guess I'll need to research "flesh eating bacteria") Thanks for taking the time to post (much more epic than anything I've been able to do this summer)

    Pill Box

Good to know & I'll leave mine in their properly labeled packaging from the pharmacy until I cross the border. After that, there's really no reason why I can't take what I need, chuck 'em in whatever I feel works & leave the rest in the car.

Back to the crater (this time for real?) Manicouagan Reservoir

...or maybe the next day (layover day due to storms today).

Back to the crater (this time for real?) Manicouagan Reservoir

2 weeks in. Looks like he could easily finish up tomorrow but I'm wondering if he paddles up the big cove on the center island or heads for the truck. Probably never a better time to check it out if he's not starving for pizza (or, otherwise, running low on necessities)

    Robocanoe

Personally, I'd rather it portaged itself. (Maybe even with me still in it... that might come in handy)
