Good solo boat for my local Tennessee River reservoirs?

There are many to consider. Hemlock Perigrine, Swift Keewaydin 15, Northstar Northwind solo are some I would start with for lake travel. If you intend miles wide crossings you might opt for something with a bit more depth to handle large boat wakes. Maybe a Prospector type hull? Swift makes a...

Improve your boat control techniques to enhance all types of canoeing

When Karen Knight first came to the Adirondack Freestyle Symposium I was teaching the first class she attended…blew me away instantly. Told her there was no need for her to continue in the class and sent her to a more advanced one. Describe something and she would do it perfectly…the first time...

Repairing a Royalex canoe- Advice and Repair

Last Royalex I had was an Old Town Otter…built like a tank. I can’t even imagine what it would take to dent the front stem like that!! Maybe an NFL defensive lineman with a sledge hammer and bad attitude?

Moore Canoe Inc - worth buying? Too old?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe Pat ever made transom style canoes. Is there another company that used the name Moore? The construction appears to be woven roving (mat) which is an inexpensive and generally heavy form of fiberglass construction. Serviceable but not...

    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

Best advice I can give is to arrange your seat so that about 60% of your weight is on your butt and only 40 on your knees. That way it’s much easier to move your ankles and feet around periodically to give yourself some relief.

    Getting in and Getting out

You will develop a system that works for you the more times you do it. As with most canoe related things, just go paddling and you’ll figure it out 😊. Welcome to the wonderful world of solo!

    Getting in and Getting out

Full disclosure…. I’m 74 but still a kneeler. As stated above, lay paddle across the rails and hold on to it and the rails. Step into the middle of the boat with one foot and, if you’re spry enough, as you bring your second foot in take it straight into a kneeling position. Then kneel with first...

A Week of Canoe Adventures: Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous, Algonquin, and the Canadian Canoe Museum

Great report, thanks for the museum pics. I met Kirk Wipper (sp?) and looked at canoes many years ago when the collection was kept at a summer camp in some odd old buildings. Amazing to see what it has become! Have to make it there someday.

    Hello from Michigan

Welcome. Used to hang out at CanoeSport on weekends, driving 3 hours up from central OH. Great shop, great folks, travelled with Ned and Ron a couple times. Bought several boats there. Great forum here. Hope you get back on the water soon!
