Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

A couple things Kraiker mentioned that I do are choke up with your lower hand and not letting that hand slip past your hip. All three used a short stroke. Sometimes I sit at an angle and other times I stay square to the hull. One thing I don't recall being mentioned is how long you keep the...

A Week of Canoe Adventures: Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous, Algonquin, and the Canadian Canoe Museum

Great TR. I like the idea of combining canoe events with some tripping. Thanks for all the photos.

Good for you Andre, I've always wanted to do a month long trip.

    Two rescues in one day

I saved lots of turtles on my lake from a one way trip to New York City, courtesy of this guy. It's a private lake and the guy told me he had permission to be there from his niece, who lives on the lake. She said she never gave any permission and was not a fan of him taking turtles. She asked...

Silent Boat Rally on the Lower Oxtongue River, Dwight ON July 26 9:00am

That's a great idea for a boating event, I hope it a big success. Thanks for posting about it.

My 20 footer is an EM White Guide. You're welcome to try it out if our paths ever cross. We're not too far apart, I'm just 20 minutes off Interstate 81 from the Wilkes Barre- Scranton Airport. This is from this morning. I got fish on all four rods. One fly rod rigged with a bass popper, the...

Nice boat, it's got the same finishes as on my Island Falls boat. I like the paddles too, what are the blade lengths on them. I also notice that you aren't sitting in the bow paddling backwards. Are you kneeling on the stern thwart or sitting or kneeling on the stern seat?

Good canoe option for 2, lake fishing

I googled the 17' Lund and it has a 37" beam and a 34.5" waterline and should be a stable boat, so here are a couple more thoughts. Boats do have an optimal weight load and if you are less then that it may not be submerged enough to get you to that 34.5' waterline, making it tippy. I would...

Rollin Thurlow and Jerry Stelmok on television

I'm glad Jerry made an exception for you. It's obvious why your daughter would want an Old Town and Jerry probably thought it was the way it should be. Good call on the half ribs, especially if you're going without a keel.

Rollin Thurlow and Jerry Stelmok on television

I'm sorry I'm going to miss the assembly this year, I'd like to be there for that. Funny thing, last fall Jerry told me he doesn't do restorations anymore, just new builds. Maybe when he got caught up he had a change of heart. He also had some medical issues recently, so that could have...

Good canoe option for 2, lake fishing

Even if the Lund has does good secondary stability, which you would find out with Alan's test recommended above, it may not relieve the uneasy feeling caused by the tipsiness problem. It may also not prevent a capsize if things go bad. I was out in one of my large tandems with a partner in the...

Rollin Thurlow and Jerry Stelmok on television

I really enjoyed my visit to Island Falls Canoe meeting and speaking with Jerry. He is one heck of a nice guy and without a doubt more enthusiastic about canoes than anyone I ever met. He told me he hopes to be building canoes into his mid nineties like Joe Seliga. I sure hope he makes it...

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

That will help minimize the twitchiness for for sure but it will also change the trim so it's not comparing apples to apples. I do think everything said above is true but I still think there is some truth to my premise that trim can affect stability. The Seliga is the only boat I have that...

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

Yeah, I think that it is the change of the hull profile. With the weight spread more evenly the hull presents a more narrow profile and that narrowness is what made it tippy. Thinking back, the boat is twitchy with just my wife and I in it without a load. OTOH, a few days before I was out with a...

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

I've been paddling my Seliga Tripper mostly solo so far this season. I paddle from the stern seat with some light ballast (20-25lbs.) either in the bow or right behind the bow seat. I find that adding the ballast eliminates the twitchiness in initial stability that this boat has, probably caused...

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

I noticed that Sue paddled her boat backwards even though she probably had no intention of sitting on the bow seat. Kneeling on the either thwart would give you the same trim, so why paddle the boat backwards?
