Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

Here are a couple of my thoughts Chip. As far as leaning and carving direction, I found that the more bow light I am the more I carve towards the side I'm leaning towards. I can see how the lack of rocker may affect it too. When it comes to paddle length, the shorter the paddle I use the...

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

When I was taking out friends and family that came up to Ak to visit we would do group meals. When meeting up with others from Ak my wife and I would do our own meals. I wouldn't feel comfortable planning group meals with folks I don't know real well, not to mention it can be a lot more work...

    1910 Kennebec joins the fleet...

That's a good question that I've been wondering myself. Typically the shellack is applied to the filled canvas. The paint on the OT was mixed by eye and I'll probably have a hard time matching it. When I have to repaint it I may paint the bottom brown and when it gets scratched up shellack over...

    Barbless hooks

I do the same with my treble hooks. On some lures I'll remove one of the hooks from the treble. On my six inch floating Rapala I removed the front two trebles and one hook on the last treble and still catch fish.

    1910 Kennebec joins the fleet...

Why the hurry to restore? If the boat is pretty much watertight and there is no rotting wood anywhere you can enjoy more carefree paddling before you do get it restored. I always thought the keel was an unnecessary nuisance too, and maybe it is. I would not add the keel back on this boat in the...

    Barbless hooks

Barbless hooks paid off in this situation. This guy was able to remove the hook by himself, to my relief.

    1910 Kennebec joins the fleet...

Very nice boat. Here's a couple thoughts I have. Take it on a trip before you have it restored. The inevitable scratches you will get won't hurt as much. The other is about the keel. If you like the way the boat paddles with it, you may want to keep it on when you restore it. I just had my 18'...

Edison Film: Canoeing on the Charles River in 1904

I guess I’m more of a romantic than my wife. I’ve tried getting her to go out where she could lean on a backrest cushioned with pillows and a blanket but she’s not interested. Maybe it would be different if she knew the history of it. As far as the canoe in that last photo, I don’t see...

    Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

I can't argue with that, I have very little experience in dedicated solos. I'm just surprised that they are stable enough for you with the dog. Good luck with the new boat and your upcoming Wabikimi trip.

Edison Film: Canoeing on the Charles River in 1904

My wife and I are long past the courting stage, but still enjoy a paddle together. This past weekend was very hot and sunny and I was glad that I brought umbrellas. I brought them for rain but they gave instant relief from the hot sun. If you are going out with a lady on a sunny day take a...

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

I don't think the seat or thwart placement has much effect on trim. Both thwarts should be the same distance from the center and kneeling against them should give you the same trim. I was just pointing out the bias about not paddling from the stern seat. Even when not using either seat she still...

    Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

Have you considered soloing a tandem? I would think that on average they would be more stable and carry a heavier load than a solo boat in a similar length. My composite Bell Seliga is 17' and only weighs 40 lbs. and was great on the solo trips I did with it.

    The ice hook

I lucked out and found an ice hook at an antique store over the weekend. The ice hook is used when paddling when the water is partially covered in ice as described in Garret Conovers book "Beyond the Paddle." They were originally used in ice harvesting from about 1890 to 1930. I have one that I...

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

I don't have a problem leaning a loaded canoe, but I do have a problem leaning a boat with multiple passengers. I don't think you need to lean your boat to do the Northwoods stroke.

    My new pack basket

Thanks Robin, the big one in the canoe is one I bought from the "basket lady" in the Adirondacks. It's nice, but not made of ash. She sells them for 145.00 as of a couple years ago. This one is in good condition, but like I said it's missing the cedar 1x on the bottom and the board for the...

    My new pack basket

Whenever I go to antique shops I'm always looking for paddles, pack baskets, military duffle bags, ice hooks and pole shoes. I got lucky this weekend finding a nice basket, duffle bag and an ice hook. The pack appears to be pounded black ash with a steam bent oak handle. The ice hook is probably...

    Two rescues in one day

Yeah, it was an aluminum row boat. I think the lesson was to pull the boat further up on shore and/or tie it off.

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

Yeah it makes a difference where a stroke is done in relation to where on the hull you do it. The best example of this is the draw. Done in the bow you turn towards your paddle, done from the stern you turn away from it.

    Two rescues in one day

The guy probably has a commercial permit and other than the trespassing is most likely legal. There is a good monetary incentive to sell turtles. A turtle in good condition with a 15" shell can bring $300.00. My friend and I killed one back in the 70's. I butchered it up and made soup...

    Two rescues in one day

Yeah, I don't know if what he was doing was legal or not, but at any rate he felt guilty enough about it to lie. He also told me that he like our lake because he sneaks into our local water company resevoirs to catch turtles and that their security is always after him.
