    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

Sadly, I happen to own one of these. Snagged it off CL for $300 a couple summers ago. Gunwales are rotted and the chine cracked a bit when I was strapping it to the roof rack on the way to the BWCA last summer (held up fine with duct tape!). I figured the only option left is to give her a layer...

    Use of Non-standard glass fabrics

I'll have to give that a whirl! I always wanted neon green skidplates.

    Use of Non-standard glass fabrics

Wow, that's crazy that actually works. Do you think fleece would work on a royalex canoe too if I used g-flex epoxy?

Best burger and pizza joints near where you live

If you're in the Twin Cities, MN area, you can find some great Juicy Lucy burgers at Matt's, The Blue Door, or 5-8. Pizza - can't go wrong with Davani's or Giordanos (thanks for the cheese WI!) If you make it to the east side of the BWCA, Sven and Ole's for pizza and Gunflint Tavern for burgers...

    OT Canadienne 17

Those are gorgeous, it's a shame OT stopped making them, and tripping canoes for that matter. That one is in prime shape too! If you're looking for another reason to talk yourself out of it, it is on the heavy side for Kevlar canoes (57 lbs).

Which first epoxy resin & hardeners to buy as a Newbie?

Another vote here for RAKA, and I definitely agree you'll want to go with the slow hardener. You'll need all the time you can get if you're doing a big area as was mentioned before. I've also used West Systems G-Flex in small batches when repairing or adding skid plates to royalex canoes, which...

    Yoke Pads

Very nice! I saw some that looked half as good at an outdoor store for over $50.

DIY roof rack for factory rails

Nice, that's a good idea! It is 1" on the outside but 7/8" on the inside. I'll poke around online and see if I can find that size. That one would cover it on the outside, though... It would probably help with rust buildup leaking out the ends too.

    Peshtigo River State Forest (WI)

Nice! Looks like a cool area to explore with the various canoe camping sites. Less than perfect weather = more solitude :) Do you use a true solo canoe or sit backwards in a tandem? I've run into that hopeless turning into the wind on my tandem paddling solo and find that getting on my knees...

    Northwest Passage Solo

Wow, that is truly a work of art. I'd be afraid to take it out and ding it, but glad to see you're putting her to good use!

DIY roof rack for factory rails

Haha I'm sure you scared the crap out of anyone tailing you! I'll have to give that 3 canoe method a try, though I worry about unsecured 2x4s flying out unless it's strapped down really tight. Maybe some thick foam or something around the ends too as I nearly whacked my head on it stepping out...

DIY roof rack for factory rails

Thanks! Good call on the carpet Karin. Can't go wrong there. I didn't even consider the whistling, maybe just some tape? What have you used Jason? Grandpa Paddler - how'd you get 3 canoes on there? I have 3 but have always been worried about how to secure the last one on top.

DIY roof rack for factory rails

70"+ roof racks are hard to find - and are quite pricey. Thought I'd share my little weekend project in case anyone else is looking for an inexpensive method to make some sturdy steel bars for multiple canoes. I picked up all the supplies at my local Menards. I topped them with rubber weather...

Original Old Town Pack Angler Owners HELP!

TimmyP - oil canning is just when the middle of the canoe bulges up on the inside of the canoe. Poly canoes are notorious for this and apart from looking nasty will slow you down. Latremorej's ribs help keep the structure intact so it doesn't bubble up. That is one sweet set-up by the way!

    Cedar gunwales?

If you're considering softwoods to save weight, might I suggest southern yellow pine? It's as strong as oak, almost as hard as cherry, and can easily be found in 18'+ lengths. You need to get the highest grade of it to avoid knotty sections, but I've been pleased with it on my Kevlar build so...

    Carbon Fiber Nokomis

Wow, that looks awesome! Say what you want about imperfections but that smooth finish looks factory.

    Greetings from Minnesota!

Thanks everyone, that definitely gives me a lot to chew on and it's cool to see that there's more than one way to skin a cat, er hull. Very creative options. Marten - I'm trying to remember the lake we put in at but the halfway point was Lake Sasaginnigak and we then took the Bloodvein down to...

Last gear purchase(s) that made a real difference?

I upgraded our sleeping bags a few years ago - what an impact a warmer bag can have on your morale. Also, a $6 reusable coffee filter hung over boiling water made real coffe an option in the morning. Oh, the simple things...

    Greetings from Minnesota!

Thanks for the welcome! That all makes good sense - I didn't even think about how the foam core could warp the bottom of the hull. If it's a CF layup, you'd think stiffness wouldn't be as much of a concern as flexibility over hidden rocks or occasional beaver dams, which a layer of Kevlar may...

    Greetings from Minnesota!

Thank you for adding me to the group! I can't believe I've been missing out on this wealth of knowledge for so long. I'm also a canoe enthusiast and typically paddle the local lakes, streams and Mississippi River with a few trips to the BWCA/Quetico a year. I also did a wilderness trip for a...
