    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Oh, so youre saying using a layer of all carbon and a layer of all innegra? I thought about that but was too chicken to go straight for 100% Innegra not knowing the properties. They say Innegra floats on resin which scared me away since I wont be vacuum bagging. I got the carbon Innegra and...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

sailsman63 that was my thought too, Raka even has something on their website touting its strength compared to the 4 oz boat cloth. I didnt need to add any extra resin when laid up, but it requires more effort to squeegee it through all spots in the weave if that makes sense. It is stiffer than I...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Jim - sorry if I am not following the terminology but the layup is a layer of CI and a layer of all CF on top of it. It is basically a double layer of carbon in one direction and a single layer of carbon + single layer of Innegra the other direction. Are you thinking of laying a piece at a 45...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Thanks everyone for the interest and suggestions. The hull will be the same one I posted before - 18 foot cruiser type that has gone brittle. Going with a window shrink wrap for a release. Here are some of the findings: - Innegra cuts like Kevlar and might actually be messier than it...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

I finally pulled the trigger on buying the supplies needed for my future build composite canoe, so I guess I HAVE to turn them into something I can paddle :) This might be last one I get to build due to space constriction (and my wifes patience) so I am going for the gusto! The goal is to make...

    How to skin a Wenonah

Nice, happy to hear the sides are still solid. Maybe that lizard skin gave it some UV protection! I can see why youre considering a partial layer of Kevlar, shouldnt add too much weight Id imagine. Looking forward to seeing how it goes!

    How to skin a Wenonah

Yeah, I love that boat - fast tripper and we pack light anyway. Unfortunately I didnt weigh it before, but the difference in the factory weight and new weight is about 3 to 4 lbs. Gunwales were changed too, though. Epoxy: 3 cups, maybe more? If you dont have any cracks or tears on the sides and...

    How to skin a Wenonah

That looks eerily similar to the 84 Jensen I reglassed and posted about this summer. It also has a few smashed in points like yours seems to have. I sanded it and just laid 4 oz E glass over it before applying the epoxy all together. It looks a lot better now but didnt give it all the strength I...

    Carbon / Kevlar BLACK Pearl

Looks great!! Ive never used satin weave. Did you notice any difference with drapability, wet out or anything else with the Kevlar?

    Composite Merlin

Looks great, and very functional! Is it just me or does that thwart have a nice curve to it like those Souris Rivers?

    Divinycell cored composite

I wonder if you could try sailsmans method but with a steam bag? Basically, wrap the foam panel in plastic like a vacuum bag, steam it up and then shape it to the mold while maintaining the heat. I did something similar for the 1 in. uniwales on my Kevlar build. Cool project SG! Looking forward...

    Use of Non-standard glass fabrics

Update on Style 120 60" E-glass from Thayercraft: I must have caught him on a good day, because when I asked about smaller quantities, he said they sell it in rolls of 20, 30, and 50 yards and the options are now posted on E-Bay. A 20 yd roll is $59 (+$30 shipping). Anyone in the vicinity of MN...

Composite or strip plank Old Town Penobscot 16?

I've never poled a canoe, but I do have a 16' rx Penobscot and find it to work alright solo or tandem paddling on rivers or lakes. It actually has a bit of a shallow V to rounded bottom, compared with the flat bottoms of the Camper and Disco models. Not sure if that initial stability wobliness...

    Canada 150

I'll literally be straddling the Canadian-US border over both our great countries' birthdays this weekend. I'll make sure to whistle a little "O Canada" for you on Saturday, Christy!

    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

I'm really hoping that was the case, latremorej. The previous owner said she damaged it by taking it down some rapids and there are a few stressed points on it. I'm hoping I coincidentally strapped it down on one of those points and that it was compounded by the flimsiness of the old gunwales.

    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

No Title Ended up spending the day out of town so no water time today. I put on a layer of epoxy on the gunwales and am making an attempt to repair a broken thwart with a nut and epoxy. One cool "feature" that resulted from my laziness is the original deck plate contrasting with the lighter...

    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I see some good signs :) That layer of glass and epoxy really toughened up the hull - especially that fill coat surprisingly. When I took off the old gunwales, they literally crumbled in my hands. I installed new ones today and wow what a difference that made...

    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

No Title Alan Gage - here's what I'm defining as "cracked a bit". I was using cam straps. It's not terrible and I was probably pulling too hard, but in comparison my new home built Kevlar canoe feels a bit more sturdy.

    Repairing UV damaged Kevlar canoe

Well that is all disheartening to hear, but thank you. I don't think I'll invest anymore in trying to repair it and see if I can squeeze a few more trips out of it. The bottom is actually very tough, probably due to the foam core and extra fabric there. Sven - that has been my secret plan B :)...
