    Wabakimi is the Plan

When we went last summer we just drove straight up from Thunder Bay, about 3.5 hours. We did take the train to our put in, and we did have to wait for a bit for it to show up, but the experience was fun. Biggest difference for me - outside of nothing being marked - was the general roughness...

Musk Changes Everything for Satellite Cell Phone Service

I hate just about every piece of computer equipment ever made (except medical stuff) and I know practically nothing about how they work, but driving across NA up to the Thelon my inReach worked flawlessly. I only recall one instance where my message failed to send and that was in Wabakimi...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

2024 went to Wabakimi for 2 weeks. Six week tour of Canada/Alaska with the Thelon River thrown in the middle. Wanting to push the cold weather stuff did a last week of October trip in the ADK's. 2025 should have an ADK shakedown in May and canoeing the Missainabi in June. Then in August...

    Where’s Yellowcanoe?

There are a number of people on this site whose knowledge can be taken as gospel, and YC is certainly in that group. Her most recent contribution regarding my Newfoundland trip is resting it it's trip folder just waiting to begin. Contributions for the ages.

And portaging one of those wet sloppy things is a drag.

    Winter footwear preferences?

I always carry an extra pair of socks.

    Winter pants

Dickies, Carhartt and others are getting into outdoor recreation clothing and without the crazy prices we often see I now have 4 poly shirts from Dickies, and quick dry shorts from Dickies and Wrangler. Balaclava from Carhartt. Keep an eye out - the price will be increasing soon.

    Winter pants

I'll go with wind shell also. I just wear my normal stuff but I throw them on when the temp dips and I'm good to go. I like waterfowler pants for this application - rugged, and when combined with extra material for knees and butts pretty indestructible. I've had my current pair for 30 years...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

Bell Rockstar here - purchased the last new one the dealer had and used it for the 3rd time the last week of October 2024.

Recognizing and Treating Common Sports Injuries

Literally cringing as I read this - any one if them would have killed me. I can't help but notice a connection to the task-oriented lifestyle of mythological dudes like Hercules, what with all of the challenges. Thank you for response - very impressive!

Recognizing and Treating Common Sports Injuries

I'm sorry ppine, but I have to ask, if I may, for a bit more detail on horse and mule wrecks. Is it just as it sounds - crashing your mule into another mule/inanimate object or is there another definition, hopefully grounded in lore from at least the 1930's. I do not ever recall hearing or...

River and Lake Canoe Discussion and Input

I did not - guys at the shop said not needed and I'll have to agree. I've dragged it fully loaded over all manner of dam and such with zero issue.

Roger that - as soon as I arrived home I removed both seats and have never even thought about reinstalling them. In fact, I don't even know where they are.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Rods and paddles tied inside with boat with shoe laces I keep in a thwart bag. Instead of rod holders I use a couple of plastic clamps on the gunnel in the same thwart bag. One pack, one barrel, and a 5 gallon bucket. Depending on the portaging I still bring my outfitter frame pack - the...

River and Lake Canoe Discussion and Input

Some time back I was looking for a flatwater boat and through discussions on this board came to the conclusion that the Wilderness would not be a good match for me due to gravity. I'm 6'2 260 lb.'s and at times bring more gear then I should. For these cold weather, heavy laden trips the...

Need New Tricks for Lightening the Food Barrel

For quite some time my lunches have consisted of a granola bar and a small, individual serving pouch of beef jerky. I do freeze dried for just about everything else unless its warm in summer (where I rarely trip) and then it is cereal.

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

Thanks for all of the replies folks - really helps out - getting all jacked up for the trip. Question - do I need to pay fees for each nite in the backcounty on the FDL? We did in Wabakimi but that is a park, and in Ontario. Thank you!

    Motorized Canoes

Marathon boat is not too far from me and I have been watching for a good used one for YEARS. Perfect steelhead craft for the midwest. I have never come across one that I thought provided good value. Either beat up and asking too much, or not beat up and asking waaayyy too much. At the...
