Has a bear ever gotten your food?

Later that evening we talked with a couple guys out fishing. They were camped on the big island in the south part of the lake and they're hungry. That afternoon they'd left their open food pack out and their partly-prepared lunch was in their "gear tent" while they went out fishing. They got...

Has a bear ever gotten your food?

Disappointment Lake, BWCA, Sept. 2010 We're getting ready for a delicious first-night dinner of pita bread pizzas. While the toppings are rehydrating, I head down the shore to find a spot to stash the food pack, leaving Steve in camp. A few minutes later I hear Steve vocalizing with some...

Has a bear ever gotten your food?

I couldn't resist. I just had to ask, has a bear ever gotten your food? Did you hang it? Hide it? Leave it out? Did you get any of it back?

Sorry about your losing your dog. If I didn't already have a Peregrine I'd be interested.

    Journaling on your trip.

Very nice. Here are a couple of excerpts from a 2010 BWCA trip report: Fragrant air of pine woods, purple ripples of evening. Flies don't bother me any more. A person could become a poet out here if he isn't careful. ... and ... Today's agenda is challenging: Eat Adjust tarp Walk around...

    Am I crazy?

Sounds like a great idea! Having no experience in boat-building I can knot offer anything useful.

    NRS Velocity Water Shoes

So am I. Kneeling on the floor, I found them stiff when pointing my toes. But I don't kneel that way. I either curl my toes under (so they face forward), or turn my ankles so the side of my foot is down. They work fine that way. Update: Laced up tight, they're pretty stiff when pointing the...

    NRS Velocity Water Shoes

They're on the sides - a bunch of small holes. Not a lot of drainage compared to mesh shoes.

    NRS Velocity Water Shoes

I just got a pair of these and I think I'm gonna love 'em. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N2EMQR6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I wear size 8-1/2 (Euro 42-43) and got size 9 so they'll fit with SealSkinz socks. They're perfect. They also have good ankle support, almost as...

    Where's My Clamps ?

You'll like those F-frame clamps. I have a set and I no longer use the old maple double-screw type, and hardly ever use C-clamps any more.

    Where's My Clamps ?

I've never made a canoe before so I don't know the forces put to the forms. But I've used threaded rod with a wing nut and washer on each end once when stripping was a problem. But it looks like you've found an answer. Clamps are cheap, too.

    Where's My Clamps ?

Maybe carriage bolts with wing nuts might be still easier?

No Title This boat is still for sale. Make an offer and I'll see how the owner responds. She just bought a Mad River Serenade and will be needing the garage space. Here are a couple of pics with the previous owner (my ex-wife) in it.

    How much do you portage?

Well said. This aspect of tripping is what makes, for me, time in the BWCA a spiritual experience, one where I'm willing to give up what I'd like in order to get something of far greater value.

    waterproof maps DIY

yknpdlr, thanks for the tip about Thompson's. Kiwi makes a fabric protector that works great as a waterproofer. Scotchgard does likewise. Odyssey, the crumpling and stuffing might be nice features, but what about when you want to actually use the map?

    waterproof maps DIY

Interesting, indeed, and a lot of messing around for a single sheet. Imagine needing a map 2 x 3 feet where you have to print maybe a dozen sheets. I've found that spraying paper with just about any kind of waterproofer does a good job, and has the added advantage of being good to write on. So...
