Looks like a good use for old Royalex.

    Webbing a canoe seat?

Be sure your spare sandpaper doesn't stick out of your pocket.

    Repairing spider cracks in gelcoat

If it doesn't leak and isn't mushy where the cracks are, I'd say leave it alone. If it's mushy you might want to apply a layer of fiberglass on the inside as reinforcement. Here are a few resources to give you another couple of perspectives...

    Webbing a canoe seat?

Nice. How does webbing compare with cane in terms of comfort and durability? I've always used cane but am willing to be persuaded otherwise.

Handkerchief is high on my list...

Ditto, Robin and tump_lion. I was raised to always have a clean pocket-cloth (Taschentuch, as my German-speaking grandfather called it), and when I go out with someone I usually have two, one of which must be both clean and neatly folded. Sometimes a woman needs that sort of thing.

    16' Mad River Freedom

Shortening thwarts induces roundness, reduces flare and rocker, and makes the boat less stable.

    Bent wood pole

It does straighten out. I've even been able to counterbend it. I've soaked it, set it up slightly counterbent to try in the sun, and it holds for a while. But eventually the old bend returns. I just wonder if anyone's had experience with breakage.

    Bent wood pole

I have a 12-foot pole with hanger-bolt spikes that's seen a little use. I got it from the closet-rod section of the hardware store, so I suspect it's fir. I do know that it's a bit willowy, and it has a slight bend near the middle, not more than a few degrees. It's due to a slight aberration...

    What are you reading?

Working my way through the Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction, 1917. Just finished "The Scarlet Letter," soon to start "Rappaccini's Daughter," both by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Started "David Copperfield" (Charles Dickens) but set it aside for a while due to being affected by the descriptions of...

Common scents to avoid in tents

I know that bears' noses are extremely sensitive. I hesitate to describe the lengths I go to in keeping my tent and camp scent-free. They include no toothpaste, no cooking over a fire, no "Fresh Linen" deodorizers. A few years ago a bear walked through my campsite at night. I heard its...

Any tips on stahying mud free?

meopilite, I feel your pain. I hate having a dirty boat. I've had some success laying down some branches and grasses to take my weight. Once I even brought a 1x8 board and laid it on the mud. Mostly I find grassy or rocky spots to launch. If all else fails, I use Canotrouge's method.

The outwale protrusion is the dimension I was remembering. Due to the rabetting, it probably began life 7/8" wide.

paddlindan is right - it would be very hard to get a good roundover with a handheld router, simply because the work surface is narrow. But it can be done, and with some hand touch-up could produce a nice job. Whatever you do, I suggest giving the inner mating surfaces several coats of...

    Car Roof Rack

The weight designation is what the vehicle manufacturer recommends, not the rack maker. Yakima's website states: "Q: How much can I carry?A: This varies by vehicle, load type and crossbar length. Check the fit list to find out what load types (bikes, skis, boats, etc.) and weight capacity...

    Pre-season rituals

I do the pack-unpack-repack thing, too. I've concluded that it's a ritual that, in handling my stuff over and over again, brings me closer to the trip itself. Someone once said there's a spiritual element in it, but I suspect it has more to do with a certain lunatic obsession (though one might...

    Ice out not soon...

To the people I see who complain about the long winters in Wisconsin, it's fun to say something like, "be glad you don't live in Winnipeg!" Then of course they ask me where Winnipeg (or Nome, or Thunder Bay, or Whitehorse) is.

Thanks for the correction. I was remembering what I saw at Canoecopia - obviously not the full line.

    Suggestions on a Solo Canoe?

Whether composite boats can handle rapids has more to do with the paddler than the boat. Composites can get dinged up, but they can also be repaired. The great advantage of composite boats is that they can be made with much more refined hulls than Royalex. Many (all?) of Esquif's whitewater...
