An open letter to the group

Christy, I hesitate to speak up in this way, but I disagree with you. Robin may own the site, but it won't last long under the despotism that your comment brings to mind. I'd say the best forums are those that have clear posting guidelines and a reasonable and consistent approach to moderation...

An open letter to the group

I would say this privately, but would rather be public about it: Well said, Kim, and with a fairly balanced tone. It would be nice if all forums could air their dirty laundry with as little drama.

An open letter to the group

This is a fine site. Robin, you and I have had some differences, and eventually I realized that what was offensive to me was invisible to others. I would never have guessed at the contents of your post above. Whatever may be said, I wish you and YC and all the rest of us self-involved humans...

A solo paddler's minimalist first aid kit

My kit is similar to Canotrouge's, plus a couple of Epi-pens and three different sizes of Sam Splints (9", 18" and 36"). The three things I fear most are (in ascending order): a sprained right ankle, a broken leg, and appendicitis. I can splint a bad sprain, and someone else can splint a...

I need to buy a paddle on the interweb

I did contact them. They were willing to give me a refund, but since I'd already used it I felt I'd already accepted it and couldn't return it. I praise Sanborn's business practices but caution potential buyers to be careful.

I need to buy a paddle on the interweb

I picked it up on the way to a BWCA trip and got to know its personality quite well. The grip was the worst of its idiosyncracies. I want to be clear, I'm not dissing Sanborn. They take great pride in the fact that they do handwork, not machinework like the mass-produced shops do. My point is...

    Sawyer Summersong

Nice. Do you get 8 strokes to the side before switching? Do you have to tie your hat on to keep from losing it?

I need to buy a paddle on the interweb

No Title I liked the Sanborn guys, too, and I'm determined not to badmouth them. But since you asked, I'll show you. I was able to fix everything but the bends in the blade.

    BWCA Trip Partners on Facebook

Due to perceived interest, I've created a Facebook page for people who are looking for others to join them on trips to the Boundary Waters. It is intended for experienced canoe trippers who travel solo for lack of competent or reliable partners. If you're interested, check it out here...

    Checking in

Did you borrow from the Buccaneer for your design? It looks a bit like what I used to sail. Based on the Flying Dutchman - 18 feet with about the same sail area as yours - 100 main, 75 jib, 150+ symmetrical chute. (I'd share some pics but for some reason it won't take anything over 20KB.)

I need to buy a paddle on the interweb

I'm surprised to hear the EspressoST was heavy and poorly made. I've found Bending Branches' quality to be pretty consistently good. I have a 52" EspressoST that weighs about 19 oz - fairly light. Sawyer makes some very nice paddles. The only problem is that the indexing on almost every...

    Risk management for groups

Kim, I didn't mean to criticize you. I'm speaking for myself. You and hub may have an agreement where you do things differently. Sorry it didn't occur to me to say that first.

    Risk management for groups

I've had this problem with paddling groups. My solution is to not paddle with whoever won't respect the need to stay together. Period. Full stop. I refuse to accept the risks involved in arrogance and complacency.

Yeah ... what he (Robin) said. :-) My new grandson is 90 miles away. I hope yours is closer to you.

    Why I trip alone

For what it's worth, my intent was about going by myself, i.e., one person, one canoe, no one else in my group but me (including my dog if I brought him). Definitely!

    Why I trip alone

I've heard many people (with a rare exception, all men) comment about their wives giving their blessing and that they wouldn't go without it. I respect this attitude, provided it comes from a genuine and compassionate desire to ease a troubled mind. No one who isn't an experienced tripper...

    Why I trip alone

My practice has been to tell the person I'm closest to at the time that if s/he doesn't hear from me within two days after my planned exit date, to contact the outfit I bunked with on the way up and/or the authorities. I file a trip plan with an outfitter and my friend/partner/son; although I...
