Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

After work poling practice with a buddy I'm trying to get hooked on poling. Boats didn't come off till the next morning.

    Thanks kona!

    Morningstar weight?

Thanks both. I have DuckDuckGo'ed (that is in fact my default search engine), but as you all did, I found conflicting results. Oak Orchard has similar specs, but lists WhiteGold at 59lbs. I've had further conflicting reports from other folks online and from second-hand sellers. I'm sure...

A cautionary tale of deaths on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone.

Seems possible. A possibility mentioned in the article is "hypothermic paradoxical undressing", in which your brain function is so diminished by cold that you think you're hot and start to strip - it's fairly well documented. Could also have been hypothermic paradoxical logic of 'I'll do...

A cautionary tale of deaths on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone.

I wonder what lessons could be learned from this episode. From MrPoling and Chip's descriptions of how sudden and variable the winds can be, what are the options for safety? Would staying near shore be enough? If the wind is offshore, what are the odds of making it back to shore is those...

A cautionary tale of deaths on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone.

Sobering reminder that even the most experienced paddlers (which I am most certainly not) can get into trouble.

    Badger Paddles, two thumbs up.

I've been on a bit of an otter/beavertail paddle deep-dive the last few years, and now have a grossly delightful excess of solid wood otter- and beavertails. Note I'm doing a lot of slow-cadence flatwater paddling with underwater recoveries. Out of the solid-wood options I have (Fishell, Bruce...

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

I bought a used Vagabond which had the metal Wenonah drop plates. The previous owner had used bolts that were maybe an inch too long, and left the nuts at almost the end of the bolt. So the seat could lift about an inch to get feet under for kneeling. Once your body weight was on the seat, it...

    Morningstar weight?

Can anyone tell me the weight of a Morningstar in various layups - white gold, black gold, royalex? I realize they can vary a couple pounds depending on seat options, etc. But I've seen claims for the same layup differing by 10 lbs in for sale listings.

    Paddled with a bad motor

Best wishes for smooth recoveries, Blackfly and Blukanu!

    Harry Rock Book and Video

@Chip very nice of you to share these resources! I'd also recommend the poling section of Garret Conover's 'Beyond the Paddle', if you can get your hands on a reasonably priced copy. They seem to be going around $50 right now, which seems pretty steep to me. After waiting and search a while I...

October 14th 2023 Lake Taghkanic NYS Park day gathering

PS - I'm willing to endure scattered showers, especially if there's a tarp and fire on shore. We've had a lot of rain forecasts recently that never materialized, so I tend to head out on day trips unless lightning is a real threat or wall-to-wall rain is all but guaranteed. But understand if...

October 14th 2023 Lake Taghkanic NYS Park day gathering

@coldfeet thanks for organizing! I'll be there for the day on Sat the 14th. If weather is good I might be induced to come up for a dawn/early morning paddle on the Sunday as well if folks will be on the water. I agree about using the west boat launch. The east launch is hemmed in by...

    A Question about Folding Saws

A very fair point, though I've learned how to reduce risk in processing firewood those ways as well.

    A Question about Folding Saws

Ok I'll bite. I'm not familiar with the hand-thru-the-bow-saw safety method. I am careful starting a cut, and try to keep my steadying hand at least a good 6-8in from the cut area. I can imagine the damage easily done by running a bow saw over a hand, but how does it happen, since it seems...

    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

Best I can tell, it's $10 per vehicle entry and $10 for a weekly boat registration. I don't mind paying to support the park. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/38/details.aspx I've blocked off the 14th in my calendar.

    A Question about Folding Saws

I'm with you on taking hypothermia very seriously. But there are other ways to deal with it, potentially with lighter gear or choosing tripping conditions where risk is reduced or eliminated. A bundle of birchbark, a water/windproof lighter, a thermal bivy sack, a pocket stove....might each...

    A Question about Folding Saws

I will also mention that I've tripped many times without a saw. It's easy enough to find dead and down and break it over a rock or use a star-fire (no, not the canoe model) to avoid needing to section wood at all. But I've never NEEDED a fire in the rain.

    A Question about Folding Saws

If light and fast is attractive and size isn't an issue (which I realize is contrary to the OP, depending on interpretation), a large bow saw will chew through large diameter logs surprisingly quickly and easily. I frequently bring one on day trips in spring for clearing strainers. No, it...

    Hudson Valley/Capital District gathering

I'm available Sat, Oct 14, and possibly the morning of Sun the 15th. I likely wouldn't camp since I live close by. But I'd be glad for an all day event, maybe some potluck lunch, some trying folks' boats, working on technique together, general hanging out, etc. I was there a few weeks back...
