    Canoe Quiver Revamp

1983 Lady Bug, fiberglass layup, 36 lbs., still in good shape. I bought a Northstar Firebird this spring and love it but would like to find another Lady Bug in Kevlar so it'd be a bit lighter to carry. I had a chance to buy a beige one earlier this summer but my wife doesn't want me to sell her...

    Canoe Quiver Revamp

There's some good canoeing up there. It's not the Adirondack Park but still relatively undeveloped. I want to get back to the upper Connecticut River for a multi-day trip this fall if I can.

Poll: What Site Color Theme Do You Use Most Often?

Sorry, I wasn't aware of how difficult (or expensive) it was to set color themes for this website. I'll continue to use the default theme. Works just fine. Thank you for your time and effort keeping this site going.

Poll: What Site Color Theme Do You Use Most Often?

I do like having a background other than bright white but I'm not keen on dark blue or black. Is there a way to have a light grey background, perhaps just a bit darker than the reply/quote box grey?

    Canoe Quiver Revamp

Classy additions to the quiver, Joe, they complement each other nicely. And I like your incentive. Revamping the quiver has been an ongoing process for me, usually due to major life changes, including moving across the country and getting older. Of the original six canoes I once owned I now...

Tom Foster's Classic Video on Solo Whitewater Technique

I find that pinning the bow on flat water in my 13.5 ft. sport canoe (2.5 in. symmetrical rocker) can be quite effective in that, as you suggest, I can paddle with little or no correction so the paddle strokes are short and efficient. And typically it works best if there's a slight breeze to...

Wooden paddle retailers in northern New England (Vt, NH, Me)?

I'm thinking of contacting Grey Owl and asking them if they'd build a paddle for me with polyurethane/varnish on the blade but leave the rest unfinished so I can use oil. The Grey Owl paddle I own is my favorite straight shaft paddle but has a couple of rough spots at the bottom part of the grip...

Wooden paddle retailers in northern New England (Vt, NH, Me)?

Limited choices here in Vermont but Umiak Outdoor Outfitters in Stowe and Richmond have canoe paddles for sale. Not sure what your idea of a traditional style is but I've purchased two paddles from their shop in Stowe; single blade with Sugar Island blade shape.

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

That's an interesting idea, especially since the pivot provides a more solid attachment for the front of the seat than notches and would be less fiddly. I'll have to work up some pivot point/seat angle drawings to see how long the lever arm would need to be to have enough seat drop for sitting...

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

Just for clarification, I want the ability to have separate height positions for kneeling and sitting because in this particular canoe I kneel and sit in relatively equal amounts. I sit using a bent shaft paddle to get to my favorite places to explore, like a swampy back bay or marsh or stream...

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

I'm looking for a way to make adjustments in seat height so I can raise the seat to kneel and use a straight shaft paddle or lower the seat and use a bent shaft paddle. And I'd like to be able to do this fairly easily while out on the water. Canoe is a solo tripper with wood gunwales and wood...

    Citizen Race Canoe Suggestions?

JCH_Ski, I haven't paddled either of those Sawyer solos you're asking about but I have paddled a Wenonah Advantage in a lot of conditions that you might encounter in that race or out paddling for a day. I no longer own the Advantage - I discovered sport canoes and couldn't keep all those boats...

Dreaming is good and you have your priorities straight. Who knows, a local deal on a fast solo canoe may come your way at just the right time.

    Citizen Race Canoe Suggestions?

It'd be a long drive from Michigan but there's a Shockwave for sale at Hemlock Canoes in w. New York.

Hello from NY & a question.

Welcome. I'll second MrPoling's suggestion; between those two models I think the 17ft Wenonah Escape is the better canoe for your needs. While 57 lbs isn't light, it's manageable. If the damage is easily repairable and the price is right it would be a good start. As you imply, you can always...

Obvious safety violation: Say something or keep quiet?

Thank you all for the thoughtful perspectives. My wife and I talked about it some more and agreed that if we come across a situation like that again we'll definitely do the right thing and at least stop to chat with them and mention the PFD requirement for children. Whether or not the adult...

Obvious safety violation: Say something or keep quiet?

Yesterday while canoeing on a local lake (~300 acres) my wife and I noticed a man (maybe late 20's) and a kid (maybe six years old) out in a canoe and the kid wasn't wearing a PFD. Neither was the man. He was struggling to keep the (inexpensive, short tandem) canoe going straight because he was...

    New to me Hemlock Kestrel

Nice canoe you ended up with. We really enjoy our Kestrel. I've found that it's most stable when kneeling, especially with waves, but also handles just fine while sitting, even using a bent shaft paddle while hit-and-switch paddling. I installed a foot brace in our Kestrel, which benefits...
