When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

If they can cross the alps in socks and sandals to pick a fight with the Germans, so can we. Can we?

Crocks and wool socks (darn tough). All day and night, portaging and all. Recently I got a pair of seal skins, they are a waterproof sock, and are great when its really cold.

Other. I am diabetic and have some neuropathy in my feet. Wearing wide shoes is ok, but even those bug my feet at days end.

Enter Teva's. My feet have never been happier, can wear them all day. I wear socks with mine and wear them as long as it's not slippery out.

I only very rarely wear sandals when canoeing. I use neoprene water shoes, booties or over-calf boots. I don't really paddle in colder conditions anymore, but if I do I would wear wool or poly socks under the boots. I may wear sandals in camp but probably not with socks in warm weather.

@Sweetfancymoses, I was only logged on for a few minutes today and I though I saw you asking questions about starting a poll. I guess you figured it out. As you did, I always start a poll with the prefix word "Poll:" in the title because it's not always obvious to all members that it's a poll. Plus, the word "Poll" in the title allows future searchers to search on that word to find all polls. Maybe I should set up a separate forum for polls and move all the previous ones into it.

In the words of Ecclesiastes: For every thing there is a season. (Even sandals.)

Sandals without socks (for hot weather no bugs).

Sandals with wool socks (for hot weather with bugs).

Sandals with wool socks and Kokatat Launch Socks (cool/cold weather).

Neoprene booties over dry suit socks with wool socks inside dry suit (for freezing cold winter paddling).

And my latest find: Astral Hiyaks (no socks) any time the water is at least 65 degrees.

OK, maybe if I decide to cross the alps and fight start a fight with some Germans but I'm a bit old for that kind of butt whipping.

I went with "other" as, although it's certainly not my style, you do you and I'll try not judge (full disclosure: an involuntary OMG might be audible)

I like ankle support to extend the useable life of a twice-broken & mildly arthritic ankle so I wear boots for almost everything. The only time I wear sandals is to get someplace that I'll soon be barefoot (beaches, pools, the deck of a bass boat... things like that) so socks would just be in the way.

What could go wrong?
Sure, Keens are closed toe, but they are also sandals. Nothing is as much fun as a zebra mussel or a sharp stick in the side of the foot. I also hate the way that sandals suck gravel in.

I didn’t start wearing socks to paddle (unless wearing tennis shoes/boots when it’s cold) until I started kneeling and realized I didn’t want to burn the soles of my feet. As PaddlingPika above noted as well, I’m sick of sunscreen and am choosing to cover up instead where possible.

My daughters consider wearing socks with Crocs (or sandals) a major faux pas. Me? I go for comfort so I don't care and wear them anyway, anywhere and with any activity I'm doing.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

Ya, my kids use tell me the same thing. Since I am prone to developing foot fungus, I have long worn sandals with or without socks. Before I retired 17 years ago, I had to get a note from my dermatologist stating I needed to be able to wear sandals with socks at work due to this problem. Anti-fungal crème I use daily for about 6 months per year.

I did a summer BWCA trip (I think it was Sept actually but temps were in the 90s). Having never been, and flying in, I brought chacos and hiking boots. There ended up being a lot of muddy portages and the flies were out - chacos and wool socks ended up being the ticket, with the dry hiking boots reserved for camp. I've done the opposite in cooler weather with rubber boots in for wet footing and chacos with wool socks in camp.

i'll never forget a physics professsor in the Astronomy Dept who I had in college always wearing socks with sandals. Johannes Hardorp, a gruff looking big German guy, but with a nice friendly disposition.
