Snow? — Where You Are

What kind of snow have you had this season where you live? What does that betoken for river and lake levels this spring and summer?

In northwest Connecticut we've had the least snow in my 32 years here. We had one small snowfall of about 2 inches in December, which melted in two days. I've never before had a winter where I've never had to plow or shovel. This will not be good for the whitewater season.

Northern California, where I used to live and which has been in drought for years, fortunately has been inundated by rains and snowpack this winter.
Same here in Putnam County, NY. I believe it's because I had my snow thrower serviced this past fall. I'm figuring we'll get wacked with at least one in March.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, MDB and I lived in Pattersonville, just a bit west of Schenectady.
With the elevation and the weather patterns then, we regularly had 10 ft high snow banks
I have pics somewhere, I’ll look for them.

This old relic was used 75 years ago to plow sidewalks at Dartmouth in NH. A bit overkill these days I imagine.

I just use it to relocate my wood shop when the mood strikes…

I live near the home of the Buffalo Bills. We have had two significant snow falls this year, 7+ feet around Thanksgiving and our Christmas blizzard which shut down Buffalo for a week leaving 6+ feet of snow and multiple deaths.
February is usually a snowy month but we had 60 degrees here yesterday. The only snow left is piles left from plowing.
I used to look forward to snow cover from Thanksgiving until the middle of March. Water would stay hard until April.

It's a very mild winter over here in Switzerland. I like snow a lot. I'm usually very much into skitouring (going up the mountains with skins on and ski down) but I haven't felt like going this winter due to the lack of snow.
The good thing about it: access to soft water...

Air temperature -2.6 C/27.32 F

Thunder storm just blew through. Temp is in the upper 30s. Still raining.

Started snowing here early this morning. Pretty heavy now but predicted to stop, warm up, and all melt.

Same here Bill. Ice and about 4 inches of snow yesterday, last night. 10 degrees F this am. 40s for the weekend, another round of snow, rain coming mid week … very unusual.

Rain and 60° F (15.5° C) in northwest Connecticut. Going to look at Housatonic River today.

André, does that lake usually freeze? And it that gear in your bow or just water ballast?

For the past 14 years, Kathleen and I have lived in east central Saskatchewan, about three hours due east of Saskatoon. We have had a lot of snow this year. The lane to our house is 1.7 km (0.9 miles) from the grid road. We don’t have our own snow removal equipment, so must call the Rural Municipality (similar to a county) when we become snowed in. They plow our lane when they are out for $100.00 CAN ($75.00 US). The most times we have called in a winter is six. The fewest times is two. We have already called four times this winter, which generally lasts through the end of March. I expect we will establish a new record for the number of times we need to be plowed out. Despite the amount of snow this year, the temperatures have generally been mild, and the deer are doing well. Image taken last night.

Glenn, usually that lake freezes along the shore for a few weeks. I never heard that the whole lake was frozen over.
What you can see in the bow is water ballast and a dry bag with extra clothes and some other stuff in it.

Andre,
I also skin and ski...over here it's known as AT (Alpine Touring) or BC (Back Country Skiing).
Those mountains in the background look challenging, do you ski there?

Stripperguy,
Welcome to the Alpine Touring or Back Country Skiing board (just kidding)! It's a great way to stay in shape and enjoy nature.
Thank you! AT or BC, now I know what to call it in English.
Yes I ski those mountains in the background. Altough not all of them are "ski-friendly". I skied quite a few but not all of them.
