I have a souris river canoe that after 21 years of use needs to have the bottom sanded and epoxy applied. It would seem SR used west system when they build it. I was thinking that since I am using RAKA in my cedar strip build I would just use it. Do yall think it would matter what brand I use or would there be bonding issues? Thank You

You will be fine with RAKA .
Check with Souris ! It likely was built with Vinyl Ester resin.
Epoxy should bond !

I will get some pictures to post. There are some scratches and rubs that are down to the fiber so it definitely needs an epoxy redo. Souris Rivers claim to fame is that they use epoxy resin as opposed to vinyl resin. I figured to use a coat of polyurethan for protection. Do you think a gelcoat is better. I don't want to add any weight that is not absolutely necessary.

You should have no problem using a different brand of epoxy. Yes, a cover coat of either a urethane or marine varnish with UV inhibitors should do fine.

If weight is a concern for you, then paint is the way to go. Prep the surface and a single coat will block any UV from reaching the epoxy (gel coat will be a lot tougher than paint).
The issue with using just varnish is that you need several coats to build up a thick enough layer to give protection. The premium varnish will require at least 3 coats, big store varathanes will require many more than that, they are very low on solids and make very thin coats.
