I’ve officially gone to the dark side. I’ve installed kayak racks. The main reason is so I don’t beat the heck out of my canoes on rocky streams. Please don’t judge me.B8311B52-23C1-4962-A92C-21C2AC88B8F9.jpeg

I own three kayaks but haven't paddled them since 2004. My kayak period was a few months in 1980 in California whitewater and from 1996-2004 in seakayaks. I then went to Hawaiian outrigger canoe for four years because I never felt comfortable, physically or mentally, in a kayak and never mastered a roll, which I had in a canoe. I always paddled open canoes at the same time I was paddling kayaks and the outrigger, but then went exclusively back to open canoes in 2009. I really should sell those things. At least they haven't rotted; no wood.

Experimenting with different paddle crafts, paddle types and paddle techniques is not dark. It's all part of the palette of paddling pleasure.

Of course, Tony, they do make canoes out of the same rock bouncing plastic as they make kayaks. By the way, did you ever sell your psychedelic Jackson kayak?

Not judging you, if you want to paddle kayaks tell them over at PNett…when I saved this site from going under I made it clear, canoes only. It looks like we are slowly accepting kayaks, from the “photo of the day” thread to general posts about kayaks.

Sorry if this offends anybody who paddles a kayak, but the canoe only rule has served this site well, I for one would like to keep it that way.

Sorry if the irony is lost on you, Robin.

So here’s what I ended up getting to save my hull and extend my paddling season. I haven’t paddled it yet. Pretty sure I can load it myself. My grandkids should be able to handle it well too.

Does anyone use a single blade with a yak?

Layups are ok but I sure miss my Royalex Argosy.B60BA40D-6E4E-490E-9BB1-E523B455EFD3.jpeg

We're not going to have debates about kayaks. This remains an open canoe site. That doesn't mean we can't have an occasional picture or an occasional mention of kayaks among members who are contributing open canoeists. But this occasion has now run its course. Thread over. Thanks to everyone for civilized discussion.
