Recently while fishing from an OT wc canoe I noticed that when I laid my paddle across the gunnels with the blade resting on a diamond head bolt it was much less likely to slide off than if just laid across the gunnel. My question is, was this intentional or not, and does anyone even know? Does anyone else use them for this?

There are some old hardware catalogues on line that show diamond head carriage bolts. I can't seem to find an obvious utilitarian reason for them. I think they are basically decorative. Prior to Old Town using the diamond heads, the carriage bolts were countersunk in the rails likely providing weak points in the inwales. The diamond heads solved this problem and looked good too.

I think they were made so that OTs were recognizable. It is a cool feature. I like the old bolts.
