A couple of years ago when I bought my Platypus Gravity Works water filter, it was one of the many many filters on the market that removed giardia cysts and bacteria. None (that I knew of) removed viruses, however. Not a big deal in most of North America. But now there are at least two filters that purport to remove viruses and some metals/chemicals as well and they also claim these filters can be retrofitted into virtually any existing water filtration system.

Curious if anyone has given either of these filters a try.

I guess to kill viruses you could always drink a shot of Lysol or shove a really bright light up your.... I mean inside you and that would certainly kill the said viruses...
st kidding

Alsg; actually they've been around for years, but they're called purifiers, not filters because they use an iodine or similar cartridge as well as a conventional one to kill both bacteria and protozoa, as well as viral particles. there's a good article here-

Thanks, soutergriz.

I don't think either of the ones I linked to are iodine based or UV based but the information is pretty thin. The Aquamire claims it's a filter. The Sagan does say it is a purifier. But again, neither is very specific about its technology or how it does what it claims to do.

There is also the very expensive but reportedly excellent MSR Guardian Purifier -- a hand pump that mechanically removes viruses via an extremely small pore size and tight tolerances. https://www.msrgear.com/water-treatment/filters-and-purifiers/guardian-purifier/02370.html

Viruses are some of the smallest microscopic organisms out there. If there is a filter that will stop a virus, I would imagine that it would take forever to filter a quart of water.
