    Maps... I like maps.

The influence of my older brother, in his early years he worked on plate tectonics, then he spent 25 years surveying/mapping the area surrounding the East Arm of Great Slave Lake and portions of the Coppermine watershed. He has spent the last 30+ years turning the crazy theory of Snowball Earth...

    Maps... I like maps.

One of my favourite maps is the Surficial Geology Map of Canada https://ostrnrcan-dostrncan.canada.ca/entities/publication/0bddaa23-9445-4156-a541-8bab8de689fc It's a very large file (pdf) to download I find it very useful to determine the surface geology of any area you are planning to visit...

Yeah 2009 shows that for the same time period flow rates were about 10 times what I experienced in 2017. 2010 was a low year but still 3 times higher flow rate than 2017.

I wish I'd had high water! The Savant River section was fine, the first day or two from Osnaburgh was ok and then it was all downhill from there. The last section from The Albany Forks confluence with the Kenogami to Fort Albany was 250km of endless gravel bars, 7 days of grinding back and forth...

    What got you into canoeing?

I don't have any personal memory but I can relate what I have been told. I was born in late June 1954, 3 weeks later my parents loaded up their 1940's Dodge Fargo panel truck, my much older siblings jumped in while I was carried in a wicker basket. We headed off to ????, I don't know but...

I started my Albany River trip from Harris Lake which is the next lake north of Chivelston. To get to Harris you need to get off the train at the Savant Lake train stop (hwy 599) and get a vehicle shuttle to Harris Lake. This route avoids the portage from Chivelston to Harris. Hwy 599 was...

    Sigg-Tourist

I found this thread on a board for stove nerds, started off by someone who stumbled on a full set with the 123. There was some thread drift involving using alcohol burners (with pictures). https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/sigg-tourist-kit.51045/

Yes it did, I forget the year (maybe 2020?) but they switched the Toronto departure time to mornings when it used to be evenings. When I took the train to Savant Lake I arrived there 3 hours late at about 2:30am. Now it's people that are on the eastbound train that get dumped in the dark. The...

    Travel Fishing Rod and Case?

I'm not much of a fisher, rarely take a rod on trips. ,about 20 years ago I was doing a trip in the far north where I knew that even an idiot could catch fish in Northern Quebec so I bought a mid-grade 3 piece rod and just used the plastic "case" it came in. On that trip I was a very successful...

    ACR Resqlink+ PLB

I had an original InReach (before Garmin bought them out), it died after 10 years, probably because I foolishly let it drop 4 feet onto a hard surface. It was actually semi-functional but no longer reliable. I replaced it with a now discontinued (= cheap(er)) model the SE+, it does not have...

    Floatation Bags

I have many sets of air bags, a number of my (used) canoes came with bags. I only use them in my playboat which is only for day paddling or an overnight trip where I don't have much gear. For extended trips I have plenty of gear that will displace water (the whole point of air bags), my gear is...

Initially I was thinking maybe the Suzie but that didn't seem to match up, then the Kekek but I guess that wasn't it either. I think maybe the Megiscane is cursed!

What is your best combo? canoe + plane

I planned but forgot to mention that rates are higher in areas where fuel has to be transported a great distance. This definitely applies for "North of 60" routes.

What is your best combo? canoe + plane

In Canada chartering a Beaver will run CA$10 - $12 (US$7.00 - US$8.50) per mile (double the distance of you destination from the take off point) plus an external load fee (usually about CA$200). Payload for a Beaver is about 1000lbs depending on how much fuel is required for the flight...
