Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Ohh... Looking forward to it. Was this the hull that was being designed last time I was playing with a solo design?

    Food Staple Trail Cooking

I'll say! Some of the commercially available stuff is half or more added sugar by weight.

    Food Staple Trail Cooking

I might have a look, when they're back in operation. I've found I have a liking for dried blueberries, which are not cheap around here. I'm primarily targeting things that would work well in a granola.

Possibly side point: where do you get decent-priced fruit? I'm trying to meat/beat pricing of off-the-shelf dried fruit from Wally-World.

Looking to build a low volume, poleable tandem to set up as a solo

I can confirm from recent experience that Delftship free edition is still alive and well. For those that don't run windows, it behaves perfectly under WINE. I suspect that these two are related. A hull with a flat bottom and enough beam to provide some static stability will by its nature be...

    Your emergency canoe repair kit?

I've used Gorilla Tape a bit. Once it adheres, it really does stay put in the water. I used it on an unfilled (rough) dacron cloth, and it didn't like that. It's much happier on smooth surfaces.

    Canoe Restoration

That would probably be my approach. This does hinge on whether or not the interior glass is still functional. If the interior glass is bad, then @Alan Gage is correct, and a new build would be easier, as in my experience the interior glass job is the hardest part for a new builder. Well, I'm...

One more newbie calling for help :)

Welcome to the site, Serge! And welcome to the sport! I don't recognize this specific canoe, though I expect others to be along shortly. Some information that may help with the identification: Length - it looks about 16 feet? (488 cm) Beam (Width), both at the gunwale - which will only be...

    Canoe Restoration

I'd be concerned that if the interior glass comes off that easily, the strips are going to mostly fall apart. Typical strip-layup glues aren't water resistant at all, and OP says that the hull was waterlogged. I do agree that re-fairing the hull form is a necessity if this one is salvage-able...

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

All Teh Paddles! I sometimes bugs my family. Like some others, I tend to experiment. My collection isn't as extensive as some, but currently: Short-shaft, oversize otter tail. Nicest paddle I own in terms of fit and finish. Cedar, cherry and some maple laminated. Glassed, very fine blade...

Mesmerizing/Interesting Phenomena & Experiences Without An Eclipse

Some lovely shots here, for sure. Mine wasn't quite as spectacular, nor was it from a canoe. It was, however, on/near a lake. I was hiking back a bit after dark with the help of some moonlight. The trail ran up against a small inlet in one of the local recreational lakes, and the after-dark...

Strip canoe with no glass, only varnish inside?

I know I'm late to the thread... Seems like the key to some of the older glass-less builds is that the ribs provide transverse strength, which a modern strip core entirely lacks up until the installation of the glass. Sairy Gamp, in particular, had elm ribs, so very compact bit of strength...

    Canoe Restoration

Kind of sad to see that. I hope that the damage came from a lot of good times on the water. Mem might be right here, but I'll play devil's advocate and say that this still might be salvage-able... Depending on some factors. First: Do you have any info on the canoe? Where/who built, what kind...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My current solo is a DIY SOF as documented at This thread. (Note: Not the right way to do a SOF. There are some lovely boats out there. This isn't one of them.) TLDR; nominal 13' X 30", 24" waterline. Fishform, 2.4" bow rocker, 1.8" stern rocker. Sharpish stems. How do I like it? This build...

Detachable Yoke for Swift Carbon Gunnels

Oh... You're thinking of getting/creating something like those knobs? That could work.

Detachable Yoke for Swift Carbon Gunnels

Just as a side point, in case you are considering following some of the other recommendations and buying online: You probably don't want a carriage bolt. They're the ones with a rounded head with no way to grip or drive them. (they're intended to be tightened into the surface of timbers by a nut...

    Oak Stripper

The lines look nice... I'm trying to figure if the red is due to stain, or if they used a very amber resin for the glass. That's got to be a beefy boy. Full 1/4" strips, too. I did Some weight calculations a few years ago. If they're about accurate, I'd guess that canoe comes in around 75-80...

    Too cold to paint, so...

I've successfully used the white vinegar/steel wool version on Red Oak. Beautiful blue-black. Unfortunately, It's been spotty - I have had difficulty duplicating the result. Seems to vary from piece to piece. Thoughts?

    Paddling in the Pool

Ohh... some pretty water. That's pretty much the exact opposite of my current local conditions. We're dryer than I've ever seen this early. Of course, we got major T-storms and 2+ inches of rain tonight, so making up for it a bit. I'm somewhat familiar with the same conditions as @Bob B. and I...
