    Burning plastic

    Solitude isn't for everyone

On a cycle ride in Burgundy we passed by a string of happy school children along the canal path, each and every one of them singing out " bonjour!" as is their learned cultural etiquette*. (Yes, it is an oft misunderstood thing.) After 20 or so I opted for the occasional "bonne journee!" * This...

    Burning plastic

I'd posit the pollution thing is as much to do with scale as anything else. Besides, we are all part of the pollution problem. As consumers we assume the responsibility, like it or not, of the product/byproducts and their eventual end of life decisions. Not the perfect industrial business model...

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

I splurged on a Black Diamond headlamp, supporting a small local business. So now I'm back up to 2 headlamps. They seem to escape me in camp or on jobs. No idea where nor how, but it feels good to be in the preparedness mode as another season approaches.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

Warning. Blab. I've grown from an awkward loner child into an awkward loner adult, albeit surrounded by family I cherish. I've always assumed my search for the solitary was more than merely social insecurity , I was in fact an "introvert". But according to the definition above, it's a bit more...

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

I went nuts. Absolutely squirrely. Not because of any #Blackfridaylabourdayboxingdaysenior'sdayseizethedaysusandey thing. I decided to follow wherever my mood took me, and it took me to a guilt-free place normally inhabited by shopaholics. I felt out of place, a strange animal there, so i didn't...

    Wish me luck.

Good luck Steve! A lot can happen in just a few years, and generally does. But being 6 years wiser can't hurt either! Fingers crossed for you.

    Photo of the day

Celebrated Yule on the solstice, and much anticipating Christmas, in our own particular way. Hogmanay to follow before Imbolg... Bought a tree to continue that tradition, and have been disappointed to find the branches, while soft and supple to inquisitive gkids' hands, do not support all the...

This is staggering. So hard to hear. But thank you for sharing with your friends this brittle slice of life, and giving us the reminder that we need, to be thankful for every day.

    My Paddling Partner is Recovering

Poor guy. Hope he heals and rests up. An eventual house and yard bound recovery isn't as hellish as we might surmise. He deserves a reprieve from faithful doggedness. An all inclusive vacation. Tripping without him will give the both of you new perspective on companionship. Absence makes the...

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

Planning trips for next year for this ol boy involves old man "pipes" and eyes throwing darts at a map. Don't mind the misses. My sons and I are Irish/Scots tipplers. Our chosen malts are a luxury I'd forgotten to include in this. Paired with stories and memories. My wife's fruitcake didn't turn...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

"In one school of thought, bench seats make a tandem canoe more stable if each paddler sits with their hip pressed to the paddle side. I have done this experiment: Sit both paddlers centered in a tandem canoe. Have a friend rock the canoe from side to side. See how easily it rolls side to side...

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

re : "bug season vs winter" Yesterday it happened again. The flower pail beside the front door had shed it's fake decor into the howling wind. Once again I tucked my shirt into my pants, pants into my socks, socked feet into boots , and waded thru knee deep snow, waist deep plants, to retrieve...

Kejimkujic National Park back country trips 2025

That's a beautiful craft. I'm only ever in a poor plastic facsimile; family day paddling only. Wilder coasts would be a dream. But yeah, I come here to CT for the canoe tripping only. A lot of changes since the early days, but still a good tripping site.

    Hap wilson appearances

It's still too early to see a release of guest speakers at the Outdoor Adventure Show (Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and Montreal). The Temagami Canoe Festival likewise might be another place, but they don't seem to update their website.

    Wife’s New Car

Insurance might be another consideration. Speaking with our agent helped enormously. She was willing to share prices based on data, such as where one lives in relation to accident frequency, repair and parts prices, likelihood of theft of that specific make and model. Sooo all that means Brad...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I've had brush-offs and close calls over the years. A school bus once nearly took my head off on an empty rural road; I ducked just in time to have the big mirror pass overhead, the front fender brush my hip. There've been a few other criminally stupid driver incidents. Strangely, during the...

    Wife’s New Car

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way, but perhaps try this. It's sometimes worked for me; a) Ask the wife which car she'd most like to drive on her daily drives, if it's going to be her car. Discuss other uses such as canoe tripping. b) Help her in a decision by arranging test drives...
