    Ausable River camping rules.

They keep coming up with more rules and eventually, it will be impossible to legally camp.

Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

The problem with the Northstar boats is getting one to Alaska. There are no dealers in Alaska and you would have to drive down to Washington and Oregon to pick up the boat. Northstar does NOT like to put their boats on the barge because of history of damage to 100% of the boats shipped on the...

Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

I just bought a new Wenonah Wilderness in the ultralight kevlar layup last November. It weighs 30 lbs. I bought this canoe at Wilderness Way in Soldotna just to canoe the Swanson River Canoe Trails, the Swan Lake Canoe Trails and the Nancy Lake Canoe Trails.

Sounds like a good snowfall to bring out the snowmobiles.

What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

I agree with Cliff on the cookware. The new stoves are well built, but aluminum foil for windscreens? I still use a Sigg Tourist cookset with a Svea 123 stove. I haven’t found anything that is as stable, versatile, and windproof as a Svea 123 Stove with a Sigg Tourist cookset.

    Obsolete Stuff

I use a map and compass for my navigation tools (no batteries to go dead). As nice as the GPSs are, they are battery hogs. I would have to bring an obscene number of batteries for me to depend on GPS on a long canoe trip.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

We get a lot of snow in the winter. In the past 36 hours we have gotten 18-24” of snow, so I get to ride the atv with a snow plow on it to shovel the snow. I also go snowmobile riding besides canoeing. Living in Alaska is a busy lifestyle so I think it helps keeps us healthy.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

My Gleason score is also 9, my PSA was 17.69. I am waiting for VA to ok my next set of imaging. Then my doctor and I will sit down and discuss treatment options.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Well, my plans just got changed big time. I was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. I need more testing done to determine how far along the cancer is and if it has spread anywhere else. It will certainly delay all of my plans, I just don’t know how long the delay will be, a few weeks or even...

OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

I wanted to buy a Northstar Solo, but would have to drive over 4000 miles round trip to get one. I bought a Wenonah Wilderness locally. It is only about 2 lbs heavier than the Northstar Solo. I haven’t had my Wilderness in the water yet because all of the lakes and most of the rivers are...

Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

I use Permethrin on my clothes, Picaridin on exposed skin and a thermacell in camp or in the canoe. This works for me most of the time. The few times it doesn’t work, I put on a bug jacket and headnet.
