    Sasquatch sighting

Think I might have been responsible for a Sasquatch sighting last week. Was solo camping on a fairly secluded lake. The wind was such that fishing from the canoe solo was dang near impossible. I had plenty of time to kill so I figured I’ll hike through the woods to a fishing location...

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

Love my stick stove for traveling light when backpacking. Never had a problem getting it lit in any weather and you can use it as a small campfire for ambiance.

BWCA Bear Proof Food Storage Rules Change

Sounds like the problem with blue barrels really started with people getting too lazy to hang them. Even then animals can be smart. Saw a YouTube video of campers on a campsite noted for having a nuisance bear. This bear learned campers meant food and it even learned to untie/chew the rope...

    Wind threshold

Whatever mother nature can throw at me wind is the worst. Wind can make padding impossible, even life at camp miserable. You can’t avoid it entirely so any wind <10 mph I figure is as good as it gets. 10-15mph and wind direction becomes critical. 20+ mph and I seriously consider canceling...

New purchases that have been great, even game changers

What was the worst canoe you ever owned or paddled?

An old Grumman aluminum. I was probably 12 yrs old and it was given to me and my friend because it was folded over, got pinned around a tree in flood waters. We cut out the damaged middle section and joined the ends back together with numerous bolts and tons of caulk. Boat was crooked...

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

I’ve done it but I don’t do tripping. Base camping really with maybe a max of 4 portages. Sometimes the only portage is carrying from the car to the boat. A cold beverage on a hot day is quite a luxury. I have a soft sided cooler that fits in my barrel. Frozen beer must be colder than...

The Joy of (Self-Imposed) Canoe Trip Suffering

I call it embracing the suck. Why is it that the most memorable trips are the one’s where things went sideways?… thick bugs, getting hit by a big storm, constant rain, etc. Guess if feels energizing to get out of your comfort zone. See what you can endure. Then how good it feels to get...

Stuff you don't need or hardly ever use, but you bring anyway

Tend to bring too much fishing tackle. I have a little soft sided tackle box that fits 4 trays…so naturally I’d fill all 4 trays. This year I took two out and now have room for my binoculars in there. That’s something else that’s kind of frivolous but always bring. It’s nice to watch...

Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

I contemplated getting set up with someone as it seemed like it would be cool exploring some back country lakes with one. Ultimately chose against it. Seemed like some cumbersome extra gear to lug along, useless for 80% of the fishing I do from a canoe and concerns about how long the battery...

Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

…a market for small marine electronics and mounts. Garmin Striker series are popular (4 or 5 in screens). Powered with a rechargeable 12V battery like the size of a motorcycle battery.

    Canoecopia 2024

Website is now updated. Probably will just do a full day on Saturday. I see there’s also the BikeORama event happening at the same time, same place. Will pop in there as well. The event grounds are big enough where I don't think these two events will interfere with each other.

The Psychology of Choosing the "Perfect" Canoe

Even more annoying when you find yourself second guessing nothing but your current canoe’s color.
