I saw this at my local country store here in Norfolk, Connecticut. I thought the builder had retired but I guess not. I have seen one in his shop with a dacron skin, I would opt for a lightweight canvas. It's built on a Chestnut Fox (14') form, makes for a nice solo canoe and a good tripper if you pack light.

makes me want to cry.. I know its good marketing but.. to see a bottle of Pam in it.. ....... Our local supermarket has a canoe too. Thankfully it is an American Traders canoe

Looks beautiful. I can almost smell the decks and planking. Pretty cool to find that in a little country store. Speaks volumes of the local craft and history.
If I were from around there, and even if I weren't buying it I'd be proud of it.

But I just know I'd get in trouble for carting the Pam cooking spray back to the end of aisle 4 where it belongs, a loooong way from that canoe. Ha.
The home made preserves can stay.

Google the builder "schuyler thomson canoe works", a long history mostly of restoring, there is a NYT article from 1983 plus a number of more recent stories.

Yes, Schuyler is the man, he sold me my first w/c canoe, a Chestnut Pal. I spent a lot of time in his shop thru the years, he's the type of craftsman who has no problem sharing his knowledge, in fact he used to encourage diy. He taught me pretty much everything I know about wood canvas canoes.

Although he restored many classic canoes that saw little use, he encourages folks to get the canoe off the mantel piece and use it.

He was also a pretty good paddler, winning many down river races and taking some pretty significant canoe trips.

One time he and his paddling partner showed up at a down river race on the Housatonic River here in Ct. with a narrow 18' wood canvas canoe. They where dressed in white short sleeve shirts, narrow black ties, khaki pants and penny loafer shoes. They looked liketwo rich kids who had just stepped out of one of the local private boarding schools. Got quite a laugh from the crowd.

Here's Schuyler applying "gluvit" canvas filler to a canoe with my co-worker and friend Bob Welcome. The shop is full of canoes in various stages of restoration yet he had room for us two nimrods to work on our canoes at very little profit to him. A really good guy.

Bob working on his canoe in Schuyler's busy shop, he always gave us some space to work on our canoes.

That is a beautiful canoe that looks like it will move nicely through the water. The post is also a great tribute to the builder.
