Traditional shop is coming into shape...

SE Michigan, Just a little way down the road, LOL. I've read where Sitka Spruce is a good wood for canoe building and hobby airplane construction. Is it hard to find clear boards in your area.

Not super hard, but it is un predictable... The sawyer I deal with is not the most reliable... Like most of them lol.

So it continues... So I decided to add some knee braces that connect the post to the connecting girts to stiffen the structure north south!! I had the wood so I thought why not, it takes time, but it will look way better and I will beagle to call it a real timber frame!

Thank you... So much work still to be done before it's closed in!

I'm hopping to be able to start working in there in november... All inside finished, electrical include, but I will most likely leave the outside finishing for next spring...

Can't wait for the roof, and looking forward to the siding!
Interesting floor, I've never seen that method before. I guess concrete is pricey up there. Makes sense to go with a "floating pad" of some kind, and insulation to keep the frost out.

As for the floor, I could have had a slab poured, but since it will be a place I will spend all my days working, I didn't want to harsh on the back concret floor... So I went with a wooden floor... It is also easier on tools if you drop them!!

Even slabs up here have at least 2inches of rigid insulation, I have 4" of ridged insulation.

I have a friend that build some thing about the same size and his slab with all the prep work was something like 8k... I doubt I have more than 2k in my entire floor system!!

A heated floating slab would be glammimg up a hard nosed workspace. Now that we're sticking with wood I'm interested in the finished floor too.

The finish floor for now is 3/4" BC FIR T&G ply glued and screwed to the 2x8 on 16" floors joist!
I would like to have T&G flooring at some point, but that might not happen anytime soon.

All the walls are up.... Usually on a conventional built you would frame the walls inside o the floor and square them up, sheet them and even Tyvec then lift and done... Here in reason of the timber frame being in the way( lol ) I had to build them out side with the inside of the wall facing up, so sheeting them was not an option...

Now for the roof decking that I'm picking up tomorrow and hopefully install and sheet the walls before I leave friday for our 12 day trip!!

As usual, the photos don't load in the order I wanted them to load:rolleyes:

Looks great. Are you putting insulated panels on the roof and is that the reason the walls are up so high?

Alan

Yes, 8" of rigid foam and 4 on the walls(there will be batts in the 2x4 wall as well.... R40 roof R32 walls)

So here is what I've done so far for the roof insulation, one side is done and tomorrow I will start on the other side!! So the walls are up, and sheeted( Still have to do the gables end). I did the poly on the roof all detailed out. And today I did the insulation and underlayment over the 8" of rigid insulation, R40+ is what I'm at right now... Next is the other side, and all the strapping to anchor it down and then the 2x4 false rafters and then more strong to receive the tin!! Hope it can get done before November!!

So here a little up date on the shop.... The roof is finally on, working in the snow and a by yourself make things interesting and takes time!!

So after the insulation on the roof, a membrane was applied and then strapping and the "rafters" and more strapping to receive the tin!! Build some roof ladders for the gable ends and had a friend help installed those but the rest I was on my own... With the snow!!

Next step is taping the plywood seams with a special tape so the plywood act as a vapour barrier and then 4 inches of rigid insulation on top of that... At the same time I hope to get an electrician in to do all the wiring..... Still lots of work, building the frame for the big window, making the big front door and the man door, insulating and sheeting the inside!! But first I have to get on the rd for a trip to BC to get a camper!!

Be Careful !!!
That wet snow cover, on the tin scares me !
I slid part way down a Asphalt roof once, that had me cleaning out my drawers !
Hope the weather holds up for you !

Hey Jim, I'm always tied up when on the roof... And I put 2x4 to support me while on the roof after the tin was up!!
